October 8, 20169 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 7, 2016 -> 09:12 PM) It's not unfair to give him credit for Gonzalez's season so far. Or the development of Rodon, or any of our other pitchers since 2006. Because admitting that some people in the Sox organization are actually somewhat competent doesn't fit the current narrative.

October 8, 20169 yr Rodon was the #3 pick in the draft and easily the most developed and dominant college pitcher in the draft. As it is, he has a ERA of 4 and a WHIP of 1.4 Is that development? What about the inability to develop anyone beyond Nate Jones in the pen? Or a #4 or #5 starter? What about not letting Junior Guerra pitch and then cutting him? Gonzales is 32 - he was not developed by Cooper. He stabilized Gonzalez into a solid #5. Throw a parade. The staff as a whole has been a little better than average at best, but mostly mediocre, for years. Cooper is a solid coach, but there is something to be said for some fresh thinking. Yes Gonzalez regained velocity which helped him return to form. His velocity was way down in spring training. Unless it was something mechanical it can't be attributed to Cooper. Not sure if Cooper is as great as he used to be but he's gotten an awful lot of credit for the performance of top draft picks. Probably more than deserved. Rodon did spend very little time in the minors though so we need to be patient with him imo. Edited October 8, 20169 yr by soxforlife05

Rodon is the only top 10 pick he's ever been given in the big league rotation right?
October 8, 20169 yr Even with Q and Sale 2 guys that if traded are supposed to bring enough talent back to set the White Sox up for years, they finished 14th in MLB in pitching the last 2 seasons. 27th in 2014, and 20th in 2013. Keepimg him is fine, but his Guru status with some is ridiculous. Coop will fix 'em has pretty much gone by the boards.

The #1 thing he should get credit for is the extremely low number of TJ surgeries in this organization.
October 8, 20169 yr He did wonders with the pen. He's overrated for sure. He also has the blame the fans mentality. In the Sox organization you can speak against the fan base and still keep your job.

October 8, 20169 yr Honestly the only shocking part about this was that the Sox let Don Cooper's contract expire.

I'm laughing at this... how does one develop a #4 or 5 starter? I think Q had the ceiling of a 4 or 5 in many's eyes but turned out better than that. In short, there aren't many pitchers who are long term #4 or 5 starters, you either improve or get replaced. Putting that blame on Cooper is asinine.
October 8, 20169 yr QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 8, 2016 -> 12:22 PM) Lee Elia didn't get fired for calling Cubs fans unemployed cocksuckers. He also called them "country cocksuckers". I could never figure out what a "country cocksucker" was... Maybe lower in rank than your standard "cocksucker"..? Elia made it about 3 more months before he was canned.. On other note, there was about 9,000 at the Elia Rant game against the Dodgers at Wrigley.... the game before there were 3.000 so much for superior Cub fan loyalty , I guess..
October 8, 20169 yr And what was the bwar and the fwar for the pitching staff if you strip away Shields, Latos, Erik Johnson, Danks, Beck and Danish? Seriously, are there any pitching coaches we could confidently assert would turn around Kanhle, Michael Ynoa, Jacob Turner, and the rest of the riff raff that was our pen in August and September? Other than expecting Rodon and Fulmer to perform instantly like Sale and Q, where has he failed? Isn't that just as much on the scouting/evaluation side of things, if not moreso? I guess David Robertson is on Cooper more than Hahn, too, right? Edited October 8, 20169 yr by caulfield12

That was in 1983, Harry's second season on the superstation. As I stated before, then 1984 happened.

October 9, 20169 yr The remarkable health of our pitchers over the past 10+ years—which is quantifiable, not just my feelings—has to be attributed in part to Don Cooper. This is especially true when you consider the terrible rash of pitcher injuries we had just before he took over, a time when Herm Schneider was in our employ
