Lawrie/Garcia could be non-tenders

What does L Garcia make?

Seems like a useful utility guy, esp as we've spent over $2 mil per head on Bonificio, Beckham, etc.

League minimum. He has slightly over 2 years of service.

Avi, not Leury.

This is referring to Avi Garcia not Leury. Leury is not even arb eligible yet.

Thanks

My mistake.

I can see the nontenders on those 2.

If Avi goes byebye, I believe that Tilson has a starting outfield position next season.

If the clause in the CBA was unchanged, then they could do with both of them what was done with Viciedo. If arbitration is offered and a contract is agreed upon, the contract was non-guaranteed until the opening day of the regular season. If the player was cut before the regular season started, the cost was $25k.

Offering arb could give the option to keep and trade them later or keep and play them through ST and hold them in case someone got hurt. The reasons why the team might not do that - they could really not like Lawrie and just not want him around the organization at any cost, they could really like both these guys personally but just be done with them on baseball matters and want them to have an offseason chance to sign elsewhere, or they could really want the spots on the 40 man.

If Avi sticks around he'll most likely get most ABs at DH anyway - depending if we get a guy like AJ Reed/keep Abreu or not.

Avi sucks. He's a 4th outfielder at best and has below average defense.

Strikes out at a high rate, I would have no issue cutting Avi loose. We have seen enough

If we're rebuilding, I'd rather see Avi on the team next year. He can be terrible and help us to a lower record and higher draft pick. And you never know, maybe he actually figures hitting out for real this time.

Not holding my breath, but in that event he could become a trade chip, albeit not very great of one because he can't play defense.

These are my thoughts exact. I've said this previously - his exit velocities last year, coupled with his launch angles, his first year using a completely new swing, and his age (he's 25!). IIRC, his exit velos (I know, it's not everything) were better than Bryant and Rizzo in 2016. I'm not ready to write him off completely until I see what he does on a rebuilding team with a new manager in 2017.

I think they need to get him out in left (the "hide the glove" position") and try to see if he can look somewhat competent in the field to go along with his adjustments at the plate. That dude better be working his ass off right now.

Avi is no part of a future, and he's not good enough to help a competing club either, so he should be non-tendered. But it's the Sox, and they likely keep him around.

Lawrie is a tougher one, it kinda depends on their plan for 2017.

If it was up to me, I'd tender Lawrie. His injury must be a lot more severe than we all originally thought.

I just can't see a team giving Avi his arb figure. If you absolutely must bring him back, is there any restriction on resigning him to a lower figureafter non tendering?

I don't believe so, which is why there's no reason to tender him.

I've seen the deadline was changed from 11pm to 7pm central.

I would rather just give Liriano and Coats the corners next year if this is a full rebuild

Don't worry, Avi can still be the DH.

Honestly, if we are going to be rebuilding, I see no reason why we would just non-tender Avi. $3M is nothing and while I don't peg him to break out, we currently have no better options to give at bats too and he does have talent (so while I think he has flaws that will impact his ability to get there, $3M is easily worth paying to have him on the roster as of this point in time).

I more had problems putting him in a starting spot on a team that was intending to contend.

I would not non-tender Brett Lawrie. I think after the dust settles in Free Agency there will be a market to trade him to contender that did not fill a need. He will be on an expiring probably 6 million dollar contract. He can play both 2B and 3B. Worst case scenario we hold onto him and play him at third base after we trade Frazier.

It's feels kind of similar to the Flowers situation. I feel that somebody will give up something for Lawrie. But I thought the same of Flowers.

Blake Smith has been let go.
