$225k more than he would have gotten had he not opted out.

So much for that being a big deal. Jose remains a huge bargain and a very valuable asset.

I guess I missed what happened to his 6/68 contract.

He was allowed to, and elected to, opt out of the deal into arbitration once he became eligible.

He opted out of his original contract and into arbitration. He then proceeded to agree to a measly amount more money.

Anybody who was worried about Abreu's contract doesn't really understand arbitration. The amount of $ he will make over what his contract called for will be pretty minimal even if he gets through arb. the next 2 years without being traded or extended.

Abreu is a very good player. With our teams decision to rebuild I am waiting for the usual hate messages to be posted about him especially if the Sox keep him, which they should

Doesn't his opting out potentially cost him guaranteed money if he happened to get injured? Of course, he is financially set for life so it probably was a gamble well worth taking.

You haven't been reading the board then because nowhere have I seen any hate towards Abreu or any other ball players for that matter.

This has been said elsewhere, but it's becoming increasingly clear that Abreu is a good to very-good player, but not a great one. Certainly not the superstar it seemed we had on our hands during his rookie year. Not meant as a dig; he is still on a good deal. His trade value, however, is maybe not as high as we would've expected. Plenty of first basemen out there.

Be nice to have him around if they do keep him.

He has more trade value than anybody else on this team except for Quintana. Abreu is 30 years old, so I think it's pretty safe to say that his best years are NOT ahead of him.

I doubt his trade value will get much higher than it is right now.

Eh.. Nate Jones arguably has more with what good bullpen pieces are fetching in trades.

It'd be pretty convincing to argue the same for Jennings with the prices that relievers are getting right now.
