The wrong Tom took the DNC job. Looks like a hell of a job by peirello to recruit and help out a rout for state dems in VA

He checks all the boxes with the Bernie Bros...and has one of the most eclectic backgrounds of any political candidate.

For whatever reason, he comes across as "unlikable" or not having a pleasant personality, but he's certainly committed to his beliefs/causes and doesn't shift with the winds/offer simplistic Democratic platitudes and boilerplate (like Ossoff did in GA, and Northam over the last 2-3 weeks in VA).

Northam was getting battered over sanctuary cities, MS-13 and the Confederate statues arguments over the final days...and the polling was all over the place.

Pretty interesting that guns would come up as such a big issue at the last moment with all the talk about tax reform, ObamaCare repeal and the economy's performance (in general).

They actually have a good shot at taking the absurdly gerrymandered Virginia state house and would then control the whole process, but for sure they broke the Republicans veto proof majority.

Still hoping Anthony Kennedy does the right thing in the gerrymandering case in front of scotus right now. I'd love a national independent redistricting committee law to end all of these shenanigans.

Fox news has spent next to no time covering the results last night or this morning, instead focusing on the latest blow to the Clinton administration and highlights from the 2016 election

Lot's of good results from last. Lot of DSA backed candidates won some smaller elections. Larry Krasner winning the Philly DA job is something to watch.

Danica Roem beating Bob Marshall is just so good. He is such a pile of s***.

This response was perfect

I'm glad to see the DSA actually being an effective political force for more leftist candidates rather than an in-fighting, vote-splitting 3rd party s***show like the Greens.

e: After flipping Washington's Senate last night, Democrats now have the entire West Coast on lock down.

It is hopeful to see that in a world where a race baiting campaign won the biggest election in our country at least it doesn't win every election.

There was a concern after 2016 that the run on state legislatures/governorships led possibility of consitutional change open seeing as they were nearly at 75% control. Fortunately that is now pared back.

A YEAR AFTER TRUMP, DEMOCRATS, SOCIALISTS, AND POPULISTS SWEEP ELECTIONS

A CIVIL RIGHTS attorney who delights in suing the police is the new district attorney in Philadelphia. A democratic socialist shocked an incumbent Republican in Virginia. A black woman who prosecuted a white cop for shooting a black teenager was re-elected as prosecutor. Three months after Charlottesville, a black lieutenant governor was elected in Virginia. A transgender woman who focused on traffic problems knocked out a longtime culture warrior who focused on bathrooms. A criminal justice reformer flipped the Washington state Senate to Democrats. A wet bag of mulch beat a race-baiting lobbyist in Virginia by a stunning nine points. Maine voters expanded Medicaid. Long-held Republican seats in Georgia flipped in a special election. New Jersey, finished with Gov. Chris Christie, elected a Democrat in a landslide.

Facing what looked to pundits like an insurmountable 32-seat gap, Democrats are on the brink of taking back the Virginia House of Delegates, a result that now comes down to recounts.

In special elections since last November, Democrats have dramatically outperformed at the polls, though Republicans have dismissed each flipped seat as a one-off, and not as evidence of a pattern. Tuesday will be much harder to write off.

A wide range of different types of candidates with different messages in areas across the country won last night. There's no One Neat Trick To Win Every Election, and I think that's one of the most important messages to take away from last night. Gotta get the right candidates with the right message for the race and area, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

I can't find it definitively anywhere... did the Dems definitely turn the Virginia State House?

I believe it is tied now but the margins are so small on several races that they are going into recount.

Right, some races are as close as 69 votes. Does look like they have a slight majority, but that could change.

That's with an overall D-9 or +10 vote, too. Really highlights how ridiculous gerrymandering can be. I think it's even worse in Wisconsin, which is the case before SCOTUS right now.

edit: Also saw that Gillespie got more votes than any previous GOP gov nominee, but that D turnout was massive. More people engaged in our civic institutions is a great thing. Democrats win elections when they actually bother to vote.

Yesterday was honestly one of the best days of my young political career. Got to watch a blue wave of returns come in while sitting in the White House bouncing questions off a high-ranking administration official.

Everything has changed after last night. It's pretty exciting.

Hopefully that momentum carries into midterm elections.

Its nice to have optimism, but its way too early to say "everything has changed." We are about 1 year away from being even remotely close to that conclusion.

Everything has changed in the narrative and the way the Republicans are approaching 2018. They're in a box. Non-Trump Trumpism failed resoundingly, which is the strategy they were all planning to run on. And Trumpism WITH Trump also fails. They're damned if they do, damned if they don't. This is a completely different narrative than we had a day ago, and the implications are huge.

Then they never understood "Trumpism" in the first place. Trumpism isnt beholden to "failing" or "facts", it is continually changing the facts/narrative to fit whatever conclusion that they want.

To them it doesnt matter what happened last night, they will just make things up. That is why losing those races last night "doesnt change everything." For some people in Congress it will definitely make them more nervous about their specific seat, but none of the Governor races were heavy Republican states, in fact both states went for Clinton. Now if it was Wisconsin, maybe youd be talking about some major implications, but again these races (imo) were must wins, not upsets.

A little over a year ago the idea Trump would beat Clinton was only held by a very small minority. Im not going to start saying "everything changed" until there is some actual change in a state that needs to be flipped

I'm more in line with your thinking SB, but keep in mind it wasn't just governors' races. 3 or 4 of the top 5 GOP Congressmen in Virginia were tossed out last night in a huge wave. Democrats also managed to break the supermajority in one of GA's chambers. We've also seen a pretty steady trickle of GOP retirement announcements at the federal level, and it'll be interesting to see if that picks up pace now.

e: it won't be in effect until the 2022 election, but last night conceivably opened up a couple of US House seats for Democrats from Virginia since they'll have a major say in the post-2020 census redistricting now. So that's some actual change, even if the effects won't be seen for awhile.
