Great to see Giolito finding his slider, which he used so effectively vs righties last year

Nobody is pushing him too hard, this is way over reactionary.  I trust Herms assessment far more than this thread acting like we need to pull him

Truly a special talent. Helps you win one way or another each day

  • It's the only acceptable way to play the game.  Hustle isn't always running into the walls, it's a mindset that improves every aspect of the game--mental sharpness, the will to win.  You must apply it

it seems as if the scouting report said to try and be aggressive against Martinez, because this game is buehrle pace.

Yea he's rounding into form with his command and breaking stuff.  I think we should probably give up on the idea that he's a 94-95 mph guy.  He's a 90-92 mph guy with (in theory) really good off speed stuff with a tough plane for hitters to get a look at with his height.  That hopefully will make him an effective 3-4 starter for the Sox.

Giolito looks very sharp today. Even the hit and HBP were pretty cheap

Man there is a lot of room in that St Louis outfield.  Kinda get used to the smaller power alleys of GRATE.

How was that a ball?

WOW.  Robots.

Struck him out twice

You gotta be bleeping me!

That was clearly a strike, but Narvaez is a terrible framer on low pitches

Looks like we got a classic, 10 pitch per inning duel

He is, but there didn't seem to be anything wrong with the frame on that pitch

Giolito looks as good as I've seen him. Still concerned about the velocity, but you don't need so much velocity if you can paint the corners like this.

That's penny smart and pound foolish thinking.  Nobody is saying "don't try".  What we are saying is there's no reason to treat this like game 7 of the world series.  It's May, he's 22 and has battled some minor lower body injuries.  The club is not competing this year.   Don't push him too hard.

Someone was b****ing that he should have been more aggressive trying to steal.  I'm with you.  There's no need to pull him and there's no need to be going balls to the wall with a sore ankle.

Abreu, that’s a great way to break your ankle. Good lord

oh man Jose makes me laugh a lot.

In the roid era Delmonico would have been a 30 jack a year guy.

Stealing a base is not balls to the walls....

Abreu should be at 1b with that theory, don't try pushing him to get a double because he might pull something. Its ridiculous to play the game like that.

Narvaez is such an underwhelming player.

great breaking ball

If he were a starter, sure, but I'll take his offensive production and on base skills from a backup catcher. Defense needs work though

His breaking stuff has looked pretty sharp even if his velo is still down.

I don't know how much of the game that Narvaez is calling, but they are looking good together today.  Giolito is mixing stuff and location (up/down and inside/outside) really well.

Way too early but if he's still mowing these guys down into the 7th, the scorer ought to look into temporarily changing Molina's hit to just an E5.
