Josh Donaldson

Featured Replies

I think he deserves his own thread at this point.  With JDM opting in and Abreu receiving a QO.. It may be time for us to explore some new alternatives.  What about Donaldson for first base?  A 3 year 65 million dollar deal I would think would get it close.

I don't think we need him at this point.  All he'd do is block Vaughn's ETA.

My idea would be for him to play 1B for 2020 and then move to DH.  But yes, this would be tougher to convince Donaldson of that.  I do see that point.

Taking him off third knocks his value down big time. He will find plenty of options at third

Yeah he would be able to find someone to play him at third.. But if we offer 5-10 million more, do you think he would care? Also, how much would it really knock him?  I'm assuming he would be average (at worst) at first base, at that's me being conservative.  Still a stud hitter.

Donaldson is interesting, in that his position is not one of need, but his bat would be a welcome addition to the middle of our lineup.

He's still a solid 3B, so I do not think we are the best fit for him to sign with. Could see the Braves wanting him back.

The beginning of this is flawed because Donaldson is a 3rd baseman and Moncada would have to be moved to another position if he signs.

Will he be going back to 2nd and blocking Madrigal, or wasting away his youth at 1B and blocking Vaughn?

Don't really see the fit.  We need a DH/1B, not a 3B.  Don't pay for an elite 3B an then throw him at DH when you can get a solid DH bat pretty cheap.

Couldn’t Donaldson rotate from DH, 3rd, and 1st?

He could spell Moncada and still get 600 at bats.

I don’t see the point of overpaying an injury-prone, mid-30s third baseman to convince him to change positions to be a short term stopgap for two of our top prospects (Vaughn, Collins) when a short-term stopgap already exists (Jose Abreu) and is loved in the clubhouse.

Yeah he’s a bit better than a Abreu, but let’s spend the money on pitching instead.

a bit better?  Dude is stratouspheres above Abreu. Agreed, I'd rather have top pitching though

Why would you pay a guy $30 mil a year to rotate?

If it makes you feel better I was only paying him 22 million to stay at 1b :D

Well, since he made $23 mil for one season last year, I doubt that he'd accept less.

I think he's going to be in Wrigleyville taking over for Bryant at 3B.

He was a gold glove finalist at third in the NL in 2019.  Wherever he signs he will be the opening day third baseman.

I think he's also a heavy option for the Nats should Rendon go elsewhere.
