I don’t think a trade, or even a free agent move is appropriate for one month. Sosa is an upcoming talent for sure. But overmatched by MLB pitching. He needs more development time. There are other infielders at our MILB level who might be worth a look

Jerry probably can't find enough change in his pocketbook to sign him.

From what I hear, the A's are on the road playing the Rangers and Elvis is balking at the requirement that he take the Greyhound from Texas to Chicago....sounds like a prima donna to me.

Andrus has a 97 wRC+ and is competent defensively, so why not? He's also below 50% on GB which will probably blow the rest of the team's minds.

There is a little matter of 173 more PA = $15 Mill vesting option; I assume the claiming team would be liable for that albatross which would be awful for the Sox for next year.  And I guess that's what negotiations are about.

You are 1 GB with 45 games left. You do anything and everything to win this thing. If a competent SS becomes available you go after him. You might catch lightning in a bottle for these last 7 weeks. TA should be back for the last 2 weeks correct?

Let's be frank.  If Andrus was competent, there would have been a line out the door for him at the deadline.

Well Stone says they are trying but bringing up Romy might mean Andrus isn't in the picture.

It would be minimum wage for a month and a half.

He was released.  His old contract is invalid.

Let's be even more frank. His 1.6 FWar would currently rank 4th on the Sox among position players and one of only a few to have positive WAR offensively and defensively.

I wouldn't say that. Romy is up cause Leury's on the IL. Signing Andrus would allow the Sox to send Sosa back down to AAA for more consistent playing time. Romy can stick around as a utility guy until Leury is back.

That’s what Tampa Bay and the Dodgers have been doing the last few years, at least at the MLB level.

Tampa has most of their top players by fWAR playing multiple positions. Granted most of that has been corner outfield or 1B as the second most played positions, but they are using 1B/LF/RF as opportunities to get better matchups for their hitters.

The Dodgers have been using Lux, Taylor, and Muncy as multi-position starters which allows them to choose which matchups they want for their bench players. They aren’t forced to use a Leury to fill a specific hole in the lineup every single time. Instead they can shift those 3 around to fill a the gap and still choose the right bench player for that specific game.

That’s absolutely the way to go for every prospect that doesn’t project to be an all-star at their primary. The greatest benefit would be for middle infielders where you’d want them to be comfortable at 3B and corner outfield, but I’d also want my corner outfielders to at least be comfortable in both corners as well as 1B. There is just too much benefit to flexibility even if the player would never be good defensively at the other positions.

Kike Hernandez another prime example in past years.

Heard that Robert got sick from his commercial/econ class flight back and forth from not playing in Charlotte...

See, that is why a bus is the way to go....or amtrak.

All true , just wondering if the Sox had a shot at him and he refused because another team might offer him more playing time . Just thinking out loud since I think if it was going to happen it would be announced by now unless they have to wait until he passes a physical.

Maybe Ozzie Guillen, a fellow Venezuelan, will be putting in a good word to Elvis.

Technically all of baseball would have had a shot at him both at the trading deadline, and when he was on waivers unclaimed with the remainder of his $14+m contract for this year, and the vesting option left out there as well.  NO one wanted him with either option.  Now teams can sign him for the minimum, and my guess is he will look for the best playing opportunity, which is probably the Sox for now.

The Braves are also a possibility but he'd have to play 2B and his playing time would be gone when Albies is back soon.

And they even have Vaughn Grissom who is off to a hot start until Albies comes back, which I'm pretty sure is soon.

All of which I know and me asking if they had a shot at him meant since he was released since I knew the Sox had a good chance to get him in the pecking order . My only concerns are  that he is taking his time or if the Sox have claimed and signed him if a physical is holding up making an announcement.

He is a free agent.  There is no claiming him.  He has to agree to terms with a team now.

Lol come on man.  You have to look into it a little harder, he doesn’t come with a contract if he was released.  I know you are always insanely depressed about free agents but this is a no brainer, it’s minimum unless another team trumps it

We're not claiming anyone. He's a free agent.

I didn't realize that vesting option just goes "poof" upon release.  The rest of the contract doesn't - it's just that Oakland is liable for it.
