Lost rebuilding season? Check

Desperate team looking for anyone to pin a positive story on? Check

Fringe AAAA 1/2 tool player having an insanely hot streak that the White Sox will want to “move forward” with in their latest “off the scrap heap” love affair? Check mate

I would love to believe in this guy, but I just can’t. He’s too old, too slow, too left handed, too one dimensional.

Please Please Please let him come back to earth before the Kool Aid Man reaches the White Sox FO

I'm enjoying his hot streak and play at 1st even tho I think the dude should have been DFA. If he's just got some lightning in a bottle at least he's giving us a little good play on a league min deal rather than just flat lining into negative WAR like that overpaid bum in LF.

You say that like it would be a bad thing. That's more than we have ever gotten out of him.

Medium term I think it’s potentially a terrible thing for this organization.

Holding onto a Gavin Sheets that has a hot two months (which turns in something like a full season at .250/.310/.450/.760) past this season, especially if Andrew Vaughn goes busto, means that Gavin Sheets is potentially your idea of a First Baseman of the Future that You’re Building Around.

That would be a disastrous notion.

he's got a beautiful swing. I'm impressed that a guy that big and strong has such an ability to crush high and inside pitches. I hope I was wrong about him and he's finally turned a corner, he has the tools to be a very good hitter.

why do you have to build around your first baseman? that's seemingly the White Sox MO, but if you can have a first baseman making no money and hitting for .850-.900 OPS, I'd call that a good thing. first base and dh seem like the last two positions you should build around/devote real money to, but that's just me.

I am confused as to who is this 1B that a short term moderately successful Gavin Sheets has you afraid of blocking.

I have to say that panicking about Gavin Sheets being good enough to block someone is a new level of Sox fan achievement I did not expect to see this year.

I am not panicking about anything, that seems a strange way to put this. How could anyone panic about anything on this team? We have reached the literal bottom of our fandom.

I’m not afraid of blocking anyone on the current team. The first baseman of the future should be a quality proven MLB FA or a high draft pick.

The point is that I don’t want some Jose Valentin type of situation where a replacement level player becomes this evergreen mainstay “heart of the team” for the next four seasons while scuffling to Dan Pasqua type numbers because he has a hot first half in one year.

That’s a very White Sox thing to do, and I think you know it.

An even more White Sox thing would be Gavin Sheets and Andrew Vaughn becoming some sort of “Veets” 1B platoon that maxes out at a combined 28 HR and .805 OPS.

I’m saying Sheets hot streak - whatever it ends up being - can’t be for real. He will come back to earth for many reasons.

Having a replacement level 1B might be passable if we had any power prospects at any position. In the White Sox’ case, we need a prototypical slugger on a team that struggles to score runs. Sheets ain’t and won’t ever be enough.

So you aren't even worried about Gavin Sheets is going to block someone now, you are worried about him blocking someone years down the road who we haven't even acquired yet?  All because he has had a decent start over 12 games?  Yeah that is the definition of unnecessary panic.

Ok. I guess you know how I feel.

I’m worried that the White Sox are going to do what the White Sox frequently do with fringe players that get hot. Bet on the flimsy notion that the kid has “come into his own” and “grinderball” worked

Not many replacement level players put up 32 career WAR. That’s more than Konerko. 17 WAR in five years with the Sox

We're all just enjoying the 3-hit night. Sounds like you need a congressman with an armed escort to fly down to where you're stationed.

So you're saying that our future 1st-baseman should be Andrew Vaughn? Blink twice if this is a yes.

The Sox have stuck with Sheets for the past two seasons as a part-time starter playing out of position to the tune of a sub-.700 OPS, even though he is a 1B by trade yet hits like a middle infielder.  The Sox are going to ride his current hot streak until it ends and then ride him for another 250 at bats into the deep freeze of his upcoming and inevitable cold streak.

Whaaa? Jose Valentin was well above average major leaguer in 4 of his 5 season on the Sox. Are you saying you don't want Gavin Sheets to become a very productive player on the Sox?

And then you will continue to post from your 0 pWAR (posting WAR) hot streak about it, and even when he ends up with a moderately productive season, you'll still lie about it and pretend he hijacked the team plane and crashed it. I need a buzz. Pepsi, Monster, Red Bull all work. Hurry up. They're talking about higher powers.

What do you consider a “moderately productive season”?  You think Nicky Lopez is good so your expectations obviously aren’t very high.  You said it, so you can define it.  What to you is a “moderately productive season” for Sheets?

Dude, every single baseball player doesn't need to be A-Rod in his prime.

Sheets won't get starter at-bats, but if he puts up 1.5-2 bWAR this season, that's great. Daniel Vogelbach is a comparison, and we'll never sniff the money he's made hitting a home run every now and then. That aside, Sheets is probably a way better overall hitter and athlete than Vogelbach ever dreamed of being.
