He’s a potential free agent option a year from and won’t cost us a draft pick or international slot.

I’m not sure how I will feel about this a year from now.

On one hand there’s a possible position fit.

On the other, it feels like Todd Frazier. a guy with a bigger name than his performance justifies because of a home run derby win.

Especially if he has a decent year this year it feels like they’d add him on an Abreu like  contract and wind up with Abreu like the Astros got.

3.8, 2.8, 2.1 slide in fWAR...and would be 31 a year from now.

No more over 30 vets paying for past performance.

Just a littleeee short of the Prince Fielder contract lol

Turned down 7 year, $158M extension less than a year ago LOL

Not quite as bad as Juan Gonzalez turning down Tigers...has to get equivalent of 5/$104 million on next deal.

Should put up huge numbers with Soto in that lineup.

"Alonso also reportedly had a three-year, $71 million deal from the Mets on the table but took the shorter one to bet on himself."

Should have taken it. He’s not trending in right direction.

Who said he would get a Prince Fielder contract?  The only thing I recall was you saying you’d be ok giving him close to that amount.

Boras usually wins but this is a huge L

I’m not suggesting we sign him, my point was more that signing him right now was the definition of insanity and that’s even more true because if we really want him we can wait a year and not be penalized.

If there's any certainty in the future, it's that a massive contract needs to go to a true five tool star player with plus defensive skills and not a 2ish fWAR 1B in his thirties.

Haven't we learned from the likes of Dunn LaRoche M.Cabrera Alonso and Encarnacion???  The contract that the Astros gave to Abreu?

The White Sox have sunk more money into DH and 1B with less oositivet results than any team baseball the last 10-15 years.

If we really think signing Alonso's the answer...it would have been far more logical to put Burger at 1B.  28 years old, far cheaper, and Alonso only beat him 1.8 to 1.4 from an fWAR perspective.

He usually gets in trouble with the guys who aren't quite the top level, but he tries to market as the top level.

I also wonder if this gives Vlad some though as to an extension.

Guerrero Jr. already turned down $340 million and won't negotiate against after Feb.18th.

When I said the Sox should sign him and make him the face of this currently faceless franchise I was told he wants Fielder money and would certainly top the 7/$158M extension previously offered by the Mets. Oops

He’s had a lot of Ls the last two winters. Bellinger, Snell (he saved face this winter I guess), Jordan Montgomery, Alonso, Kim, Bregman (TBD)

Feels like he has been losing more than winning lately outside of his top guys.

Yes, we were arguing Alonso’s worth relative to Fielder at the time of free agency. Fielder’s contract adjusted for inflation is significantly higher than what the Mets initial contract extension offer was. I believe Alonso will age far better than Fielder.

The fact that Alonso got so much less than the initial extension offer pisses me off even more that the Sox aren’t a factor because these types of situations where Boras completely misplays his hand are the only shot the Sox have at landing top free agents.

Nah, I’m good with them not overpaying the guys who are on the downswing of their career and cost a draft pick.

I only see one guy trying to justify a Prince Fielder type contract for Alonso, and everyone else mocking the idea...
