I'm sure McKivin played a part in getting Smith over but this is encouraging because for years, the Sox biggest weakness has been pro scouting. Smith becoming a contributing member of the team would be a nice win for the new regime.

The interesting thing is that most of the pre-Rule 5-draft prognosticators missed out on Shane Smith. Melissa Lockard of The Athletic is the only one who tagged him as a Rule 5 pick. The MLB draft brain trust of Callis, Mayo and Dykstra didn't even have Shane Smith as the top pick from the Milwaukee org.

If he wasn't even on anybody's radar, kudos to pro scouting. Unless McKinven suggested him, in which case, you can't keep hiring new bench coaches each year to get special insight on another team's org. depth. Or maybe you can...

It would be an absolute crime to not let him be our 5th starter right now. He looked fantastic today, the stuff is legit. I hate use spring training as the basis for evaluating a player, but it's beyond me how the Brewers let him unprotected. It's front end stuff or legit closer potential. I think he's now our 4th best pitching prospect.

Need a few breaks along the way but Schultz, Hagen and Shane Smith Sean Burke and Grant Taylor could be one hell of a rotation.

The Smiths  and Colson  & Braden Montgomery could be fun eventually .

Shane Smith should be pitching in the next couple of days...they have Leasure and Mason Adams starting these next two.

Unless they're pitching him with Schultz Hagen Taylor on Sunday in the Spring Breakout game.

You'd think they would prefer he goes 3-4 innings on his regular turn...which would be Thursday.

I think some iffy weather has moved guys like Davis Martin and others to B games to ensure they get their work in.

White Sox: RHP Shane Smith
This honor could go to infielder Brandon Drury, a veteran non-roster invitee who hit two home runs and drove in five during a victory over the Reds Friday. Right-handers Davis Martin and Grant Taylor also fall in this category, but Smith, the top pick in the 2024 Rule 5 Draft, earns the nod. Smith struggled with control in the first inning of his first Cactus League outing but has since been dominant on the mound, striking out eight in four innings against the Asian Breeze Thursday. He’s in strong contention for the fifth starter’s spot. -- Scott Merkin

First mention he's likely to make the rotation over B.Wilson.

Venable hasn't addressed the fifth spot yet.

The best thing I heard all spring: "Scouts talking not only about Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith, the White Sox's consensus top pitching prospects, but putting Grant Taylor in the same elite category as them.

Taylor, an imposing right-hander with a big-league-ready body at 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, spent his spring sitting at 99.2 mph with his fastball. With four other pitches -- mostly cutters and curveballs, with sliders and changeups sprinkled in -- Taylor isn't just a power arm destined for the bullpen. He could move fast and is firmly part of a future rotation primed to include Schultz, Smith and whoever stands out this year."   Jeff Passan espn.com

“He pitched very well today,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “He’s got a good arm… I thought he showed great promise.”

Smith has yet to officially make the White Sox roster, but it would be malpractice for them to not add him – thus offering him back to the Brewers – with the arsenal he possesses and spring he’s had (3.38 ERA in 10 ⅔ innings, including a two-strikeout game of Shohei Ohtani).

“It would mean a whole lot more than I can say right now,” Smith said. “Whatever decision they can make, I can live with. I felt like I put my best foot forward this spring, so whatever they decide, I can live with it.”

PHOENIX – Ten months ago, Shane Smith was an undrafted 24-year-old reliever at Class AA. Now, a starting pitcher with a different organization, he’s throwing 98 mph with ease and a surefire member of an opening day big-league rotation.

Typically, this would be the sort of story that typifies the Milwaukee Brewers’ pitching development. But, instead, roles are reversed.

If Smith, who’s still living with former Brewers minor-league teammates Logan Henderson, Tate Kuehner and Brett Wichrowski, looks like he did against his former club on Wednesday, he could end up being one that got away.

"The Sox could certainly live with more of what Smith has given them over his last three Cactus League outings. Since surrendering four runs over 1 2/3 innings in his first appearance of the spring, he’s thrown nine scoreless frames over which he walked one and struck out 10. Five of those strikeouts came in three innings against the vaunted Dodgers’ lineup on March 8, and two of those were against reigning National League MVP Shohei Ohtani."

You could say the same thing on a lesser scale for now about Bergolla. Kid looks like he knows what he doing on the diamond.

White Sox: Shane Smith, good addition
There always are going to be missteps across the length of a full season, but through two strong starts, the right-hander appears to be a shrewd pick at the top of the 2024 Rule 5 Draft. Smith impressed during Spring Training, handling the Dodgers’ regular lineup during one appearance, and has allowed only four hits over 11 2/3 innings in the regular season. Smith, 25, added a changeup through his own offseason work, against which the opposition is hitting .083, and is taking full advantage of this fully healthy opportunity. -- Scott Merkin

Chris Sale only did it twice. If Smith comes out and hits his marks again on Sunday, when he’s scheduled to oppose Garrett Crochet of all people, it will be the first streak of three games meeting those criteria in all of franchise history.

(Smith has now put together consecutive starts of two or fewer hits, two or fewer runs, and at least 17 outs...which has only happened in consecutive starts 18 times since 1901.)

White Sox: RHP Shane Smith
Smith was the top pick in the 2024 Rule 5 Draft and really a testament to the entire White Sox organization for researching and selecting the right player. Through his first three starts, the right-hander had allowed the fourth-lowest batting average against offspeed pitches at .094 (3-for-32) and while he had walked seven, did not give up more than two earned runs in any of those three starts. It’s very early but the 25-year-old looks to be a burgeoning part of this rotation and rebuild moving forward. -- Scott Merkin
