The lowest home opener attendance that I remember was in 1968 when they drew only 7,500, it was during the riots after the assassination of Martin Luther King. 1968 was also the year that White Sox winning baseball that lasted 17 straight seasons came to an end.

God I've been to some absolutely miserable games in early spring here in the PNW. I can imagine the players sorta loathe it as well. It's not like the midwest cold where it might be 45 but it's relatively low humidity and if it's an afternoon game and sunny it's tolerable assuming it's not a 20mph wind.

Mariners almost never play early spring afternoon games here. They can close the roof if it's too bad at night but they really prefer to leave it open even when it's a damp 45 and the wind is blowing in towards the bleachers of Elliot bay. Nothing really enjoyable about sitting on a damp steel bleacher for 3 hours fan of the team or not. Better excuses to drink beer (and cheaper) that time of year.

Of course a glorious PNW summer afternoon game is hard to beat, the season is just so short here even compared to Chicago. We might have 60 days above 75 all year. Doesn't really warm up until July and by the middle of Sep it's not hitting 80 very often.

For me it is a matter of principle. I have been to both parks in insanely cold weather. This stupid and diluted playoff system cause this March nonsense. And the Sox still can't get to the post season.

Weather forecast has cooled off by about five degrees or so...looks like most of the rain during that day will be early morning or later at night.

 

Opening Day Attendance last year was 33,000+.   The weather was a little nicer/sunnier than this year will be.

The Angels have pretty much no compelling stories other than Mike Trout and the ex-White Sox...for those few souls primarily motivated to watch Anderson, Moncada and Nicky Lopez, haha.   It's going to be a pretty big story if White Sox attendance falls below 30,000 IMO.   Believe it will come in very close to that number, +/- 1,500 either side of 30,000.

There will be no big stories no matter what the Sox do this season.

Football can always run into rough weather. Baseball is a warm weather sport. I do remember Frank Thomas and Magglio Ordonez hitting home runs on a frigid opener. It was amazing they could hit a ball that far on such a day. You can't avoid cold spring days but scheduling can help. It doesn't help to everybody and his brother going to the playoffs.

Oh I don’t necessarily agree with that.  We had plenty of them last season, just not the type of stories we wanted
