Princess Dye
the thing with Elko is we are so metrically sound in today's game that it would be weird for a dangerous bat to fall that far in the draft. Unless he somehow added some crazy amount of bat speed. the expected stats in MILB indicate he was due to come back to earth some. it's wild to think it but if George Wolkow spent a few years improving his bat to ball a decent amount, he'd just be at Elko level, and we're not sure if Elko can make it on his bat. Conclusion being, MLB is difficult as hell.

But this is where we are at as a franchise. It's some of the only things worth talking about in another miserable season for the team.

The player you don't see has to he better, until the fans see them play.

Autumn Dreamin
Vargas wins AL Player of the Week honors. Smith with some competition for the Sox ASG rep if he stays hot?
PaleAleSox
Vargas has been the biggest success story of the year (obviously assuming his better play sticks). For as bad as the Sox have been, Meidroth/Quero/Vargas/Smith/Cannon having major league success has helped soften the blow for me.

Guy was below average and just trending downward ever since. Maybe you get a couple Palka type seasons out of Elko. Maybe not. Still would rather find out than watch anymore Vaughn.

But it happens with Sox fans a lot more because they have an absolutely terrible line up. I am NOT shocked your take is to attack me personally. 1 1
southsider2k5
And for the record, on fangraphs there are 27 qualifying 1B as measured by PAs in baseball right now. -Andrew Vaughn is 27th on the offensive side. -Andrew Vaughn is 24th on the defensive side. -Andrew Vaughn in 27th in fWAR. If you expand it out to ALL qualified starters: -Andrew Vaughn is 153 of 164 on the defensive side. -Andrew Vaughn is 162 of 164 on the offensive side. -Andrew Vaughn ranks 164th of 164 in fWAR. People are convinced Tim Elko should play because Andrew Vaughn is quite literally the worst starter in MLB right now. 1

I hate to keep saying this because Elko is a good story, but for a fan base so rabid against guys with high strikeout rates and low walks, Elko is somehow overlooked. Watching him haul ass down the line, you can see how he has a sky high BABIP in the minors. But look at Moncada and TA for examples of guys that relies on high BABIPs to succeed.

For me it's not about Tim Elko, it's about literally anyone replacing Andrew Vaughn.
