GT Get out the brooms! Sun 110 pm Rangers/Sox Martin Corbin

The Sosa play at 1B is on one hand a very Sosa play but also one that I'm not super mad at him specifically about. He doesn't have experience at 1B. He saw Vargas field the ball with plenty of time to get the runner at home, then look like he was throwing home, and then decide not to because he didn't have a good enough grip on the ball or whatever it was that made him change his mind. An experienced 1B or someone with better game sense would just get to first and figure out the rest later but it doesn't surprise me that Sosa basically got faked off of first base. That's the occupational hazard of playing somebody out of position is the way I looked at that play. The "benefit" is hopefully he learns something from that fairly unusual play and he has gotten a little better at this new position in the process.

Capra might be a worse hitter than Amaya.

I checked in on the box score when the Sox were leading and had to look up who Capra was....was gonna post what is the point of picking up a guy like Vinny Capra but didn't want to be a negative Nelly when a sweep was still possible but now.......what is the friggin point of Vinny Capra??

This team has been more fun to watch and it's been a good weekend. But games like this remind us that they're not out of the woods yet.

Your right. But still

I understand that the bench has to play some and I've seen worse Sunday lineups.

But why is Capra batting in the 9th?

I've been trying to figure out whether we somehow managed our way out of having a way to pinch hit for him or if not, why Venable didn't choose to PH for him

To hang around for two weeks until Colson is up.

I was listening on the radio when Kasper and DJ gave the kiss of death to Taylor raving about how smart he was to take 2nd base on his hit…  and then he gets picked off seconds later.  🤣

You pretty much have to be busting to get to second with Capra and Meidroth coming up...no way you can rely on two more hits to score.

My read on it was that compared to Amaya (admittedly an extremely low bar), he seemed like a more useful bench player by virtue of being a fast baserunner and IIRC having outfield experience (not that there is any need for extra outfielders by now). But no reason to believe he's a better offensive player which really limits what he can do for you.

Remember that really fast guy the Sox called up a year or 2 ago who stole 2B late in the game and promptly got picked off? Then later in the year I saw he was on someone's playoff roster and I thought WTF?? I guess it's the old "you can't teach speed"

Yeah but you still go to the bag cause there is the possibility of a throw to first. Just like he's been doing for every other play

I didn't care enough to rewind and see whether this was true, but my guess on what Taylor was doing is: pitcher hadn't paid any attention to the baserunners, perhaps something consistent enough to be on his scouting report, so he thought he was getting a free base. But it seems like somebody on the Rangers staff realized this at the exact same time and caught him with his hand in the cookie jar. For Taylor, you just absolutely cannot be wrong there. Obvious upside of being able to tie the game on contact from this weak hitter at the plate, but the downside is huge that if you get out the whole game relies on that weak hitter doing something and then getting production from other guys after that.

I actually thought earlier when I saw the lineup..."I don't really like Sosa at 1B"

First things first, he still has issues at second base.

Not covering first base as a first baseman is worse for me

It's pretty bad but did Vargas bobble it or not able to get a grip on it and also fall to his knees. A clean play and they get the out at home.

Rojas could've been put in as a defensive replacement in the 9th especially if they think Rojas is the better 3rd baseman.

He has focus lapses there like he did at 1B, but he's a very talented fielder so he can still come out ahead when playing in the middle infield. A good hands guy who hits like a 2B is basically wasted at 1B since 1B so rarely get difficult fielding plays but they can really screw things up if they make mental mistakes. The way I see it, if winning today was most important you would just have Vargas at 1B and Lenyn at 3B (well, you'd also not have Capra in but that's another story). But we want Vargas to develop at 3B so we get a little worse at each position for the long-term gain...which I can support but it has some possible downsides as we have seen.

This is a terrible loss, terrible. Just like the final game of the Seattle series, winning this game today would have been HUGE, sweep a team that two years ago won the World Series.

Instead, another game showing things haven't changed: lose because of the bullpen and dumbass plays in the 9th inning.

And, it all starts with Venable putting out a BS lineup for the 3rd game of the series, just like Seattle. Will, QUIT DOING THAT in the 3rd game of a series when the Sox really have a chance to show that things are different this year

Now, I fully expect to get swept by the Mets.

Yeah. Hindsight I guess the move is move Vargas to 1st and Rojas to 3rd.

Who was missing that should have been in there? I didn't think it was all that bad. All the main dudes were in, and the rest are just moving parts.
