Again for those who don't know at one time (1981) JR was against any type of labor impasse/work stoppage.

When things got bad and baseball was in the process of losing two months of the 1981 season he was considered one of the "moderate six" owners and was actually quoted as saying the impasse was "stupid" (direct quote) and "we should settle it." (direct quote.)

13 years later he was willing to neuter his own teams chance to get to a World Series in a quest for a salary cap.

Certainly possible. All depends on which owners start putting pressure on the others to settle as they have always done in the past, and how soon it happens. I say that because I can't see the MLBPA breaking ranks on the salary cap demand.

The relatively light package L.A. surrendered to land the two-time Cy Young winner exposed the fact that the Dodgers can hoard prospects due to their ability to outbid everyone for major league talent on the open market. That allows them to keep and grow their young players and deal from that depth.

The chances we got a full season in 2027 were low, and only got lower as the Dodgers continued to expose the built-in advantages they hold over everyone else in baseball. It should be a long offseason. —R.P

"Ken Rosenthal" and "big" in the same sentence is confusing me. Little Ken knows how to keep his 'sources' happy with propagandistic articles like this. I think pretty much every baseball fan knows why teams like the Rays and Guardians are consistently good despite low payrolls, but financial parity simply does produce a more competitive environment. Frankly, this whole idea goes out the window if MLB contracts were structured like they are in every other sport, ie it takes less than a decade for a player to start earning his market value. The small market teams can keep up at the moment because the best players in the game haven't had a chance to reach free agency. That doesn't make it acceptable that 2 or 3 teams are the only options for the top tier free agents. That's been a plague on this sport since the early days when every good player just went to the Yankees.
