Waiver trades are no longer a thing after the trade deadline

We’re not saying to trade. They can still be placed on waivers and claimed. Teams have done that the last couple of years to dump salary.

The post i was responding to literally said to try to have him clear waivers to deal him to the Cubs.

Oh yeah I missed that. Sorry. I think his salary is low enough where a team would claim him though. Feels like they have enough guys to cover the rest of the innings for them season but I guess they can trying in a few weeks.

Forgot about this rule change.  I still think that some team would claim Civale if the Sox put him on waivers.

They 100% would but other than saving $1m the Sox get nothing out of that and it isn't like they have a starting pitching prospect they need to make room for right now.

Nor is the $1M going into some piggybank for the future.  Never has and never will under JR.  And for the 1st time in forever (outside of the Covid season) the Sox will be cash negative this year due to local TV.  It's like Sportsvision v.2 - he could have just renewed the contract at whatever lowball rate and made bank compared to this year, but no, he wanted his own network.

They were going to have the $70 million they were previously making cut quite dramatically either way...

Absolutely, but with $35M instead of zero, they wouldn't have a loss.  Either way, it got the ball rolling for an Ishbia turnover.

Are you sure about that?

100% sure?  No.  That being said, they are taking a hit in the shared TV revenue due to the collapse of the RSN's.  They would have been okay with that, but my point is he wanted to create his own RSN and that was a colossal failure and they are taking a massive hit on their local TV revenue that they get to keep.  You also need to add in the Dominican Academy.  Is it a JR special with a coat of paint or is he pumping in $10M?  I don't have a clue about that amount.

The Sox operated half of this year without any television revenue, and then under a new regime which is going to be lower than their previous one.  The idea that the Sox lost money again this year seems pretty obvious to me.

I'm not an accountant, but I understand a few things about taking a loss.  For example, if, near the end of the fiscal year, the team is looking at a taxable gain/profit of $X Dollars, all they have to do is pay themselves or other family members a bonus, no matter how large or undeserved, and voila you have a loss.

With a payroll under 80 million, I'm not so sure.

Payroll is not their biggest expense,  especially if they now have debt service they never had before.
