Got it. Thank you.

Does that also explain any of his dramatic drop off in results this season?

Possible, if it was bothering him for a while. Legs and the transfer of kinetic energy up the chain drives everything. But no more than 4-6 weeks back. If it was longer than that they most likely would have given him a longer time off.

Yeah on the prospects show, it doesn’t seem like it was lingering prior to July

Thank you, both.

I’m having a hard time believing his control fell off a cliff without some kind of arm issues.

2024 AA: 4.29 SO/BB

2025 AA: 1.61 SO/BB

Not normal.

He lost all feel for his slider in games I watched

That makes sense, but velocity and spin rates haven’t dropped?

His numbers were so polished last year. I was only worried about him building up his innings this year.

Appreciate the info! This kind of info is hard to find without asking someone!

Not gonna lie, I spent a lot of timing downplaying his season as a result of being pushed harder than he has ever been pushed before,  and it isn't hard to imagine the knee problems being a result of that.  It's tough to adjust from being a glorified long reliever to pushed out as a real starter if you have never done it before.  I am not surprised this year was a struggle.   I will look a little harder at the panic button if this carries into 26, but I am currently less worried about Dutch than I am Smith.

Patelar Tendonitus isn't a big deal unless it's chronic and even then MJ played through it most of his career. There's things he can adjust training wise to get the same benefits muscle wise with less stress on his patella tendons. I'm sure the staff has an adjusted plan for him this offseason. Some guys just don't react well to putting on a lot of mass and it takes time, others take to it easily like Vargas.

Tbh he looked good his last two starts after he came back from the same injury. The velocity is there. His slider looks a little out of wack. He doesn’t throw a cutter anymore. Barely walked anyone (small sample size but IIRC he walked 1 in 5 innings of work when he was previously walking like 1 guy per inning).

The injury stuff has always been a concern, but then it also was for Crochet and he’s leading the AL (maybe mlb) in innings pitched. I don’t think his stuff is diminished, he’s just learning new things and maybe didn’t absorb all of it immediately.
I’d be more worried about Hagen who’s looking a little relievery if he can’t get his command under control. Least we got Oppor and Murphy out of no where to compensate. Oppor has very good stuff. Murphy is kinda like Thorpe with a better pitch mix (and less elite change up).

Is that good enough for even fourth place next year?

non-sequitur

If Oppor and Murphy are who the Sox are re lying on to take "next steps" if Schultz and Smith have further set backs...even catching the Twins in 2026 seems like a pipe dream.

I'm not sure that we feel confident about any of our current starting lineup being around in 2028 other than Colson Montgomery (hopefully) somewhere, the two catchers and Braden in RF.

Why not?
