Wichita state and Rice were 2 schools that come to mind also. When the SEC decided they wanted to dominate baseball it hurt a lot of schools. Arkansas bought Zach Root from ECU and he wasn't high in the draft this year. And auburn bought our left fielder last year. Trey was offered i heard 250k but wake forest but wouldn't leave ECU and his pitching coach.

Twenty plus years of largely disappointing results...the main difference ibeing their stadium and control of nearly the entire Seattle/Vancouver/Portland region.

It's Jerry Reinsdorf who turned the White Sox from a large market team into essentially a "small market team within a large market" through his decades of short sidedness and unwillingness to invest properly in the team. My point in response to @caulfield12was that Toronto winning the World Series isn't going to be something Jerry is going to be mad about because it somehow debunks the competitive balance argument. ....unless the point was that Jerry will be mad because Toronto's success makes him look bad. While true such a win should be a reality check for JR, I really think he lacks the self-awareness to be mad or embarrassed by Toronto's success compared to his failure. With Seattle's success this year and the Padres making the playoffs 4 times this decade, there really aren't many teams that can claim the same level of futility over the last 20 years as the White Sox. You can still be in that $100-150 million payroll range like Detroit, Milwaukee and Cleveland and actually make the postseason...but that's where hopes and dreams eventually go to die. Meanwhile, the Mets, Dodgers, Yankees and Phillies have a lot of soul searching to do this offseason. Those pesky "underdog" Blue Jays are nearly $45 million below the 4th place Phils in spending at $239 million, although they did add Bieber and Scherzer at the deadline. Expansion teams w/ 2 titles: Astros, Mets, Royals, Blue Jays, and Marlins. There are two original franchises that have only won 2 WS titles in 120 seasons: The Phillies and Guardians.
