I think it's unlikely that they will get 160+ innings from 1 of these veteran types. I think it will take 2-3 of these guys to fill in the innings gap.

I agree. Adding on, looking at the guys they just "picked up" for nothing, Houser, Civale, Perez, Bryce Wilson, Gomez - Bryce Wilson is the only one who truly sucked for them. I don't think they're going to have trouble finding innings floating around on the free agent market or the waiver wire. They can fix guys.

And then?

They’re still in last place without breakouts from H.Smith and/or Schultz.

And you sure have a lot of faith in a pitching coach who hasn’t done anything yet with the Sox.

Civale was 22% below league average, Gomez 13%, Wilson 37%.

The biggest successes, Fedde and Houser…were turned into players highly unlikely to contribute to the next Sox playoff team.

Shopping at the Dollar Store consistently just leads to more extended poverty.

Agreed. They have been successful at finding low cost veteran options on cheap deals to eat up innings. That should continue to be part of their approach to complement the development/continuous drafting of top prospects. I don't think it's likely to think they will dip into the premier free agent market for starters and hopefully they have learned to not do this for middle relievers. They still need to determine if they have top end starters vs middle/bottom of the rotation types with their younger prospects, but they are off to a good start with building up enough pitching depth to get through the season.

Pagan's going to be way too expensive due to 2025 success...serious case of buying at top of his market career-wise and age as well.

Blackburn is "sure okay fine whatever."

Farm system SHOULD at this point be producing cheap/er replacements to plug in that have a lot more future payoff.

Rinse. Repeat.

Foster Griffin, forner KC first rounder and one other guy coming back stateside will be cheapest options.

Option 3 will end up probably like LHP Kyle Hart and is more or less an afterthought.

Kona Takahashi (29)*

The Seibu Lions are expected to post Takahashi this offseason. The right-hander has a 3.39 ERA in nearly 1200 innings at Japan’s top level. He’s coming off a 3.04 mark over 148 innings. While the run prevention is solid, Takahashi doesn’t have the bat-missing stuff that’d generate huge big league interest. He struck out just 14% of opponents this past season. An MLB deal is possible, but he’s unlikely to command more than a couple million dollars. There are some similarities between Takahashi and Shinnosuke Ogasawara, who signed a two-year, $3.5MM deal and pitched in a swing role for the Nationals.

This year’s FA class of pitchers is pretty meh. I would be fine with either a low dollar one year/milb contract with Fedde or maybe Perez, and I could see bringing back Houser, but multi-year deals for any of these guys feels like a bad idea. I just don’t want to end up watching the pitching equivalent of Benintendi.

I don't think there will be any multi year deals signed this year with the Sox. It would surprise me if there was one.

We definitely need a reliable arm that can throw at least a solid 160+ innings. I think there’s enough young arms to continue the “throw everything at the wall and see what sticks” mentality of rebuilding…and don’t commit to anyone as a reliever until you have to. But 1 steadying arm behind Smith should be a priority. Unfortunately that’s going to be easier said than done with a free agent SP on Jerry’s budget.

Davis Martin pitched 142 innings last season. 4.10 era.

And Burke pitched 134 innings with a 4.22 ERA in his rookie season. It's not unheard of for pitchers to improve. 160 innings should be no problem for him if he can have some consistency.

So what’s the plan for the rotation for next year?  To me, it feels like Shane Smith, Sean Burke, & Davis Martin should all get spots heading into the season.  Each of them are coming off 130+ innings pitched and each flashed enough at times (with Smith obviously doing so the most) to warrant rotation spots for a few months.

From there, things get a bit more gray.  Right now, Roster Resource has the last two spots being filled by Jonathan Cannon and Duncan Davitt.  Candidly speaking, neither guy should be in the Opening Day rotation (short of injuries) and should instead be depth pieces and/or swingman that still serve an important role on the 40 man roster.

So who does that leave within the org today?  The big wild card is the status of the three SPs who went down with TJS early last year.  I believe Ky Bush was in Feb, Drew Thorpe was in Mar, & Mason Adams was in April.  I’m unclear where they stand in their rehab processes, but the rule of thumb is 12 to 14 months.  OD is very unlikely, but being part of the 1H mix seems possible.  Of the three, I’m most optimistic of Drew Thorpe being able to handle a starter’s workload at some point next year given his past build-up.  Hopefully by May or June he’s pushing for a spot.

Assuming those other three are out of the mix for OD, then I believe Mike Vasil should slot into the #4 spot.  He pitched 100+ innings last year and flashed way more than Cannon ever did.  Honestly, I kind of like him more than Martin if I’m being honest, but also think you got to invest in Davis in hopes of building a trade chip.  Regardless, there is currently room for Vasil and he should be next in line.

That leaves one spot and I think it should go to a veteran free agent.  While I don’t expect a big name addition here, I would like us to swing for the fences a bit.  A guy like Cody Ponce is somewhat fascinating to me, but might require a deal that goes above anything Jerry will be interested in pre labor negotiations.  If not him, I’d look for a high risk, high reward guy on a pillow contract like say Dustin May.  Given where the payroll stands, we shouldn’t just scrape the bottom of the barrel and go with a low upside innings eater.

Tanner McDougal may get a shot before any of the TJ starters if he can pitch well in the minors if he starts the year in AAA. He pitched 113 innings last year and could make some Top 100 lists.

Sign two veterans and hopefully flip one in June when guys come back from injury.

I think the guys with pedigree are already going to be priced out of our range. Teams like the Giants are already announcing they're going to be shopping in the lower-mid range, which means 6 other teams will be right with them, and they'll all bid the $5M/1 guys up to $18M/2.

$30 million reported this week was exactly on the dot.

7 deep now in their rotation with Eric Lauer, 8 if you want to throw Yariel Rodriguez into the mix.

Bassitt could also return as a swing man.

https://edition.cnn.com/2025/12/02/style/faberge-winter-egg-auction-sold  And $30.2 million for a rare Faberge egg haha.
