Dylan Cease to TOR, $210mil/7 years

How many teams can you name that can get that out of their 3rd starter after LAD TOR Seattle?

Statistics say he averages out to a 2 across all of MLB…a 1 on some teams like the Sox, a 3 on the deepest, most well-funded organizations.

Good for everyone around Don’t get me wrong, there’s a chance the Jays absolutely regret this…but at least they are going for it. Must be nice

  • Got PAID! Good for Cease.

  • Yep.  As Sox fans, we've spent the last 20-30 years remarking at how certain free agent contracts have been terrible for that other team and that they're going to regret it.  Meanwhile, the Sox have h

It remains to be seen if this is a bad contract.  If Toronto wins the WS next year with the help of Cease and then he's washed up during the last half of the contract, will it still be a bad contract?

No.

I also believe the occasional bad contract is a healthy sign of a team being competitive.

Means you're not really trying...

Except the Sox still have two of them and not trying (except to offload them somehow).

This is the type of deal Jerry would lose his mind over...and he is right. This is BAD spending. Ishbia will want to make some splashes once he takes over...but if #3s are getting 7/210...the league is totally F'd

7 years, ridiculous. He won't be pitching in 7 years. This reminds me of Cole of the Yankees. Missed all last season. Sox can't compete with this type of b.s. going on. Of course many teams can't give out contracts like this.

He's not going to retire at 36-37 and move to a Buddhist temple.

The last guy I can remember doing something like that was a fifth starter that went to the Royals from Seattle and left the very last year of his contract on the table because he didn't want to go through another rehab.

That was something like $10-12 million though, not $30 million.

What if they have really really good frisbee golf?

Then he’ll probably become a semi-pro in the over 40’s division….

Similar wrist snap in throwing a 98 mph pitch as flinging a frisbee long distance.

Feel like that’s going to be a bad one quick.

I think you could be right, but Cease being healthy relative to the rest of the league over the past 5 years has a lot of value. Especially with his stuff. I'm not sure he'll ever learn to really pitch, but if he does as he ages I could see him having a pretty reasonable aging curve through his age 33-34 season which would make this a nice deal.

If he throws 165+ innings with a FIP below 3.8, he's definitely worth the deal. I don't think that's too far fetched.
