Tigers released OF Austin Slater.

Slater exercised the opt-out in his minor league pact with the Tigers after he wasn’t added to Detroit’s active roster by the deadline in his contract. The 33-year-old veteran outfielder should be able to latch on somewhere as a lefty-mashing part-time bench player.

Good for the Dodgers, they care about winning unlike a bunch of other teams.

  • I have a really hard time viewing the Jerry Reinsdorf owned White Sox as victims. The system most designed to screw the Sox is the one JR operates.

The Dodgers lol.  This league is just dumb. Best is those who think there are no issues. "Free Market."

Griffin doesn't make the Pirates OD roster, McGonigle seems likely to make it for DET

Justin Crawford wins the Phillies’ starting CF job and Andrew Painter earns a spot in their rotation, bumping Tajuan Walker to the bullpen. Unfortunately, I don’t think they would have any use for Benintendi.

No one does with the value of defense in the modern era.

Strider hits the IL for ATL with an oblique. Certainly they pick up Gio now?

Much smarter than giving a ton of money to Tucker. Although the Cubs should be able to afford to do both.

The Cubs should be embarrassed by their insistence on crying poor. While it is annoying when Jerry does it, the Cubs are literally one of the most profitable franchises in baseball, both on the books, and their off the team investments around the ballpark. Them going cheap is a kick in the nuts to all of their fans. They made almost $100,000,000 last year, and then pretended their couldn't afford the top end FAs.

I'll take Tucker over the next 5 years over PCA 10 times out of 10.

Agreed. And the dude easily has the most punchable face in baseball.

Haugh on the radio this morning said that PCA’s floor is being an all star and it made me laugh out loud.

The kid is uber talented, and an elite of elite defensive center fielder, but he had a 72 wRC+ in the 2nd half last year.

From June 1st through year end, 100 games, he was worth 2.5 WAR which almost all came from his glove. He basically was a 4 WAR player after the hot start, and 95% (3.8) of that WAR was defensive.

From July 1st (around the Colson call up date) on, Colson was nearly twice as valuable a player (PCA 1.5/Colson 2.7) and PCA played like a slightly less than 3 WAR player.

This is true, along with his metro attire and hair coloring. He’s trying too hard to be Hollywood for his girlfriend. Just play ball, toolbox.

I would probably take that bet. But that isn’t really the true comparison anyways. The Cubs might be getting PCA for 6-7 years rather than 4 like Tucker, and for far less money than $240 million.

Also it is purely a feeling, but the way he plays, I would guess he doesn't age well. Quick peak, quick fall.

Yeah, your dislike of Tucker has always been odd to me. He's a top 10 player in baseball since he came into the league and he's about as consistent a player as has existed in the game.

PCA is a boom and bust player, and it's not even like his boom is higher. Tucker was on pace to be worth 8.5 WAR in 2024 before his injury. Tucker was banged up all of last year, played through it, and he was still a 5 WAR level player.

I never said I dislike Tucker. I think the Cubs made a nice move to trade for him but then botched it when they refused to resign him, when the contracts are now actually much more team friendly (much shorter term in years with a higher AAV). I just don’t think Tucker will be as valuable as PCA for less years and far more money. Even when PCA is slumping with the bat, he provides value with his defense and SB.

This is true, but Tucker already has the miles. Tucker just turned 29 in January. PCA is turning 24 tomorrow. I’ll take the prime years of the 5 year younger player over the next 4 years of Tucker going into his early 30’s.

Haha, Haugh truly is the ultimate Cubbie fan stooge. At least Mully knows his team sucks and can admit it. If any player’s annual floor is an All-Star, you could put them in the Hall of Fame today. What a homer.

There are young 29 year olds, and old 24 year olds. I think PCA goes the route of abusing his body and falling apart quickly.

Sure, and I agree with you. And not that you made this comparison, but other posters have been comparing PCA to Tucker as far as value goes. Tucker is definitely not someone I would bet on to stay healthy either…

Tucker has played 89% of the games since he came into the league and only missed significant time one year (2024).

I wouldn't call Tucker injury prone in the least bit.

What's weird is you've always been critical of Tucker, you want to take a 24 year old with eight good weeks in his entire career over him, but yet you insist that you like Tucker. It's OK, we all have our guys we like and dislike.

And his injury issues last year as well, so that’s two years in a row. I’m still not quite sure where I have always been critical of Tucker. I thought it was a good trade by the Cubs but then they cheaped out on resigning him once the market dictated that these guys are no longer getting $400+ million dollar contracts. But going forward, yes I would rather have a 5-year younger potential phenom CF for more years and at half the price. Not sure why this is such a crazy thought. Realistically, like @southsider2k5 has said, they should have signed both.

Numbers for PCA's deal, no options. Two FA years. Good luck to them I guess

Seems like a smart deal for both sides. PCA is set for life with generational wealth and the chance at one last big contract once this one ends. The Cubs still barely spent any money after cheaping out and not giving $240 million to Tucker. They can also choose to let PCA walk at age 30 if he is on the decline as other posters have mentioned could happen with his style of play.
