Although his production was modest prior to this season, he took his walks and kept the Ks down. He just showed no power and had a low average.
Now he's producing while also walking and keeping the Ks down. As you said, they need to do something with him (and it really seems like they wrote him off). Maybe he's not athletic enough for OF, but how about DH? They need to see what he's got.

Maybe Gonzo rakes for a few months, and he's the guy who can headline a trade for that closer, starter or slugging OF at the TDL.

"Draft all the shortstops" they said. Now we have too many middle infield prospects and not enough outfield prospects! We have Antonacci playing the outfield right now, Gonzalez raking in AAA.

No, you're overestimating your own ability to tell me what I'm thinking. If his fundamental numbers have improved (not scouts looking at easy HRs, and filing glowing reports on that), maybe he's Curtis Mead (type) to bring back an Adrian Houser (type).

He sucks. Had a decent night defensively but can't hit.

The idea is that the middle infield prospects should be athletic enough to play a good OF. Jackson Merrill. Robin Yount.

Jogging to first on a ground out with runners on and then getting himself picked off after a mild single through the hole isn't enough for the 26th man IMO. Keep the wheels on the bus going round and round, next man up.
