Signing Murakami best Sox decision in ages. Very good investment.

Jerry had to be talked into signing him. JR will not sign him long term.

Very likely true unless somehow Ishbia has taken over by next year

Put him on the block then. Get a haul.

Don't panic.

Murakami already has 55ks (and 5Ks in his last 5 AB 👀) in 37 games lol, on pace for almost 240 strikeouts

he might blast right past Mark Reynolds

he's also on pace for 61 HR ☺️🥹

“One of the most important things somebody ever said to me is you’ve reached this point, but as you continue to grow, the thing you have to do is be able to win,” Caitlin Clark told Yahoo Sports. “I feel like that's the point I'm kind of at now. You have to be able to win. That's my main focus, winning and winning a championship. Everything else will come along with that."

Another area the Sox are lacking in at the moment.

btw Judge Soto Harper all in the $7-9 million range for endorsements....compared to Ohtani's $120 million

Besides Schwarber, there's another similar player...

James Wood with the Nationals, huge power, huge Ks but Wood has more athletic ability and isn't a complete negative on the defensive side, mostly in LF.

Ofc Murakami also getting better and better at 2B as he acclimates to mlb..

Wood plays right field.

He's a + runner, with an elite arm but his other defensive skills are just ok but offensively, very similar profiles outside of wood being a bit more athletic.

I predicted that Mune and Wood would both set the K record because they'll be good enough to play all season.

Signing Murakami the NPB player is an entirely different proposition from re signing the guy leading the MLB homeruns along with well above average on base abilities in term's of the risk scale in JR's mind, I would imagine. Hate to defend JR, though, so I will say he is horrible here.

Yep, it sucks. It would have been risky but I wonder what kind of money Mune was initially looking for on a long-term deal before he settled for the 2-year deal?

MLBTradeRumors.com’s 8-year, $180 million dollar offseason projection on a long-term contract would look amazing right now. $22.5 million AAV until Mune turns 34, before he gets too old? That would have been a nice deal.

glowing writeup of Mune

loved the last sentence of the blurb

"Above all, Murakami has been a blast to watch, a fun-loving masher who seems to be enjoying his new teammates stateside and giving White Sox fans something to cheer about after several miserable seasons."

Sun-Times story this afternoon. Neither side in any hurry on a contract:

https://chicago.suntimes.com/white-sox/2026/05/07/white-sox-munetaka-murakami-in-no-rush-to-extend-contract

Murakami said through his interpreter that right now he’s fine with all that.

“It’s very early in the season and still the start of my contract,” he said. “I’m really happy where I am at the moment. I’m not looking too far ahead, but if that time comes and the White Sox obviously feel happy with me and want to extend me more, I’d consider that an honor and that would be a happy situation for me as well.”

Unless Mune has no confidence in his ability, which he obviously does, where is his incentive to accept any sort of early extension and not take this to free agency? It’s not like he won’t be a free agent for years.

Except CLE typically has playoff teams...

the Sox might potentially have one.

But imagine if he joined the Cubs with S.Suzuki likely going FA after this year...?

The Cubs could afford him but I am sure they are done splurging after signing Bregman and extending PCA and Hoerner. Besides, Busch while not having a good season thus far is fine at 1B and he isn’t a free agent until 2030. If the Cubs spend money going forward, it will likely be on their rotation.

most teams aren't going to throw money at a 1B/DH, maybe if he had Yordan type numbers

I feel like the Sox are the perfect fit for him right now and the contract wouldn't hurt the team either

They are the perfect fit and the contract wouldn’t hurt either. But is Jerry going to jump from $75 million to potentially $250+ million? I’ll believe it when I see it…
