Trump is negotiating to buy a sports franchise

I think that was the number the JR personally made, IIRC, not what the team made.

If that was his personal income.. do you recall if it was broken down..? (i.e.. profit from the Sox versus all his other business ventures?) I do know that he makes a TON of $$ from his real estate dealings (nice to have a spy in the banking world ;)

Hence the reason I have asked three times for a link to the info. I can't find it.

It is nice to dream, but JR won't be selling the Sox.

Its not up to JR. He is just the spokesman, there are other owners that own a bigger portion than JR. IF Donald would make the other owners a lucrative offer than I bet those owners would tell JR off.

Three things that may make this legitimate.

1) Old McCormick Place converted to a casino to regenerate the conventions lost and needed for all of the new McCormick place space. Trump adds legitimacy to the operation.

2) Vacant land and regeneration. See the ABLA Homes, Robert Taylor, etc. a good real estate broker could be used here. He already is looking at the Sun Times building. In the next few years that southside land could be worth a ton. See Bridgeport development. Wrigleyville is renovated crap. Bridgeport/southside could be built in good parts from scratch as the indusrtry is removed.

3) Daley is a Sox fan and Reinsdorf is from Brooklyn. Reinsdorf sells to a fellow real estate mogul and Daley uses his influence to have the state sell Comiskey Park to Trump as part of the deal.

The downside to this is the Trib wanting to compete against a serious organization and what influence they have with MLB.

I think it is pipedream but hey what the hell it beats talking about Juan Uribe.

then we can give US Cellular their $68 mil back and then rename the park Trump Stadium.

Donald Trump is on "Good Day Live" on Fox right now. He has said nothing about buying a sports franchise....yet.

that's because I'm sure he's to busy being a schill for his version of "crappy reality television"

Seriously.  You guys are not believing Bud Selig and co's #'s over Forbes magazine are you?  :o

Even in Forbes you won't find a team with a operating profit above $20M and you'll probably find the Sox's come close to breaking even every season.

That is exactly what he was doing. They even had his girlfriend on the show. She is like 25 years old. It was a nasty picture that ran through my mind.

Seems that the Nets are going to be sold to some one else, also...

Ratner's group, which includes rapper Jay-Z.

Next up will be Puff Daddy trying to bring a team to Brooklyn.

Biggie would be proud.

Alright, here's where I got the "35 million number from:

http://www.forbes.com/free_forbes/2003/0428/mlb_18.html

If you look at the revenue, operating expenses and player payroll that leaves at least $35 million in Jerry's pocket. There may be other variables in there that Forbes didn't include, but either way, it looks like Jerry made a hefty profit of the Sox.

What else does that leave? Even the most pessimistic have to believe our team is a front runner. As others have pointed out, there is alot of upside to purchasing the White Sox and developing the ghetto land east of the Dan Ryan will someday give Trump a lot of money.

I agree that the Sox are a logical choice for Trump if he truly is interested in a franchise.

Other franchises are just to expensive with little room for improvement, or cheap and not in a good market.

Why is this good news?

Why is this good news?

Why is it not? are you happy with the teams payroll, and underachievement business wise in the 3rd biggest market in the country?

First of all, it says nothing about operating expenses. It says OPERATING INCOME, not expenses.

Second, the revenues and expenses are for the 2002 season, not last year.

The bottom line is there is no true way to know how much money the Sox make because they don't open their books. Lots of people can guess, but there is no way of knowing for sure.

If these numbers are correct, then they are basically saying that the club made $1.2 million BEFORE interest, taxes and depreciation. If that is the case, then that is a VERY reasonable profit for an ownership GROUP, which includes many partners in addition to Reinsdorf. Again, that is just a guess because no one knows for sure.

I am no accountant, but I know enough to know that these numbers in no way indicate that Jerry made $35 million.

Why is it not? are you happy with the teams payroll, and underachievement business wise in the 3rd biggest market in the country?

Are you convinced Trump changes those nesscessarily for the better?

Well, he is the 71st richest person in America with about $2.5 BILLION net worth. I'll take my chances. I really couldn't see payroll not increasing and I'd like to see what he could do to make us #1 in Chicago. Think of what we could have done this offseason if we could have maybe an extra 30-40 mil. We Could have got Colon, Ponson, and Vlad. We might have had to overpay, but that is just spare change to trump.

Do you honestly think that Trump would get into the pro sports business just to make money? Whatever he does he is going to try to win. I believe whereever he goes he will try to make a big splash, quickly.

Ill just say this.

Ive seen whats behind door number 1,

Im willing to take my chances with door number 2.

Nothing in life is certain, just more probable occurrences.

I think that it is more probable that Trump will be a better owner than Reinsdorf.

Yes, I don't believe he'd get into it to give his money away.

A guy with 2.5 billion dollars is going to throw 40 million dollars away, that's 2% of his net worth right there. Point is who knows what will happen but to automatically assume we'd sign every free agent and win the series is pretty bizarre.

Hm..I can see it now. Trump buys Sox, fires KW- hires Sam his new Apprentice, to replace KW. NBC makes a reality TV show, showcasing Sam as the new GM. Within 2 episodes the entire nation hates the Sox, and Havard Business School showcases the White Sox as a how not to run a business.

Yes, I don't believe he'd get into it to give his money away.

He does "throw it away" if you want to call it that, but you don't think he'd make it back? He maybe ups the average attendance for games from 20,000-25,000 to 35,000-40,000 with renovations and the Sox actually being decent. He makes us a contender, spends money, gives the fans a reason to go, markets them, maybe sends them to the playoffs, maybe they get 2 or 3 breaks, end up in the World Series, and win the whole damn thing.

As some have said, this White Sox team is an undiscovered gold mine. We win the Series before the Cubs, and we are not only the team in Chicago, but maybe even the league. We win constantly for 3-5 years, and maybe we are "America's baseball team."

You never know what could happen. He could gain millions and millions of dollars by owning us and taking us somewhere. It is almost literally insane to think of what could happen.

We would need to win for many, many years to surpass the Yankees, and they would have to lose for many, many years. I'd be happy just being Chicago's team.
