Two realistic Guys I'd like to Add....

Featured Replies

Greg Zaun and Frank Catalanotto. Especially if Frank is going to be out for an extended amount of time. Catalanotto is the perfect #2 hitter and Zaun would be an upgrade over everyone the Sox currently have. I don't think it would take too much to get these guys. What do you think?

When Maggs and Frank get back we have a great line up and bench. The only thing I am worried about is getting another good right handed arm at the back of the bullpen. If we do that, I will be satisfied.

If there were any way to pry away someone like a Shiggy Hasegawa or Brian Meadows even that'd be great. As SS said, one more RH arm in the pen is needed

Our lineup is pretty solid even with Frank out. With Maggs back it's even better. My one concern area is catcher. Sandy is old, Burke is back in his career-minor league form, and Ben Davis is a bust.

Are there any catchers out there that we can realistically pick up and fit into our budget for this year and the next few? I'd give up Davis and Burke and keep Alomar.

Catchers

Dan Wilson

Jason Varitek

Einar Diaz

Henry Blanco

Kelly Stinnett

Damian Miller

Mike Matheny

They are the only catchers that will be free agents next year. Not so exciting.

I really like Zaun. He's a switch hitter who can run a little, and he's hitting .299 this year. I've seen enough of Burke for a lifetime, and for whatever reason (probably because he's bad) Davis hasn't been given a chance.

Out of the list I like Matheny a lot. I am not too sure how he is doing this year, but he did win a gold glove last year.

Personally, if Pitt would take on a bunch of the salary, I'd go for Kendall. Also see if you could land Meadows too, to take the role of Mike Jackson.

Meadows blows.

In past years yes, but not this year. 3.14 ERA in 43 IP with a 1.14 WHIP. I'd take that over a lot of guys in our bullpen...

Hasn't meadows always been solid out of the pen, hasn't he just had problems as a starter? I'd also like to add Meadows and Kendall.

Matheny could be waived, and I agree with whoever said he'd be a decent enough pickup.

With Frank out, the sox will need someone to replace his bat [or at least his OBP, or someone who can hit for a higher avg]

One name struck me as I was looking up VORP's from Baseball Prospectus----

BJ Surhoff.

His VORP: 11.2

Yet both your choices were decent as well.

Zaun: 11.0

Catalanotto: 9.4

BTW, Frank's VORP is 36.3, 2nd in the AL

I would love to have Frank Catalanotto

I'd be pretty happy w/ Matheny, and Miller we be o.k. too. Varitek would be nice, but he's most likely out of our price range.

Current Stats (from Yahoo! with season-to-date player rank):

Dan Wilson - Rank: 619, .269 avg, 2 HR, 24 RBI, 11 runs, .666 OPS, .998 F%, 0 SB

Jason Varitek - Rank: 312, .272 avg, 9 HR, 31 RBI, 34 runs, .806 OPS, .996 F%, 5 SB

Einar Diaz - Rank: 860, .194 avg, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 4 runs, .519 OPS, .992 F%, 0 SB

Henry Blanco - Rank: 682, .191 avg, 4 HR, 15 RBI, 17 runs, .588 OPS, .994 F%, 0 SB

Kelly Stinnett - Rank: 1051, .305 avg, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 10 runs, .837 OPS, .971 F%, 0 SB

Damian Miller - Rank: 399, .302 avg, 7 HR, 37 RBI, 21 runs, .828 OPS, 1.000 F%, 0 SB

Mike Matheny - Rank: 635, .253 avg, 2 HR, 23 RBI, 13 runs, .652 OPS, 1.000 F%, 0 SB

Jason Kendall - Rank: 272, .308 avg, 2 HR, 30 RBI, 46 runs, .758 OPS, .991 F%, 7 SB

Obviously, Kendall overall looks the best. He's got speed and a good arm behind the plate. Outside of Kendall, who I think might be too expensive for us, Jason Varitek looks great. He's got power, some speed, gets on base, and is good behind the plate.

Matheny might be ok or Stinnett. Miller looks good too.

The sox getting Kendall does seem like a possibility. Here's a link from today's Jayson Stark, ESPN column. The Pitt. GM reportedly wants Kendalls contract off the books and soon.

If the Marlins are going after Kendall, the Sox certainly can. Esp. if Pitt takes on 30-% of his contract. Which would get Kendall's salary down under $8 mill a year for the next three years. If Pitt took on 40% then it would be under $7 mill a year.

He's getting ready to get lit up.

He's getting ready to get lit up.

EXactly why i have no interest in him.

I don't care if we get a great offensive catcher...

I just want a guy who can be decent defensively behind the plate...

If he can consistantly hit above .250 then thats just gravy...

I say give Ben Davis a shot before we panic and and overpay for a catcher...

He can't do any worse then Burke at this point.

Veritek will finish the season with the BoSox. Kendall would be a nice addition. Another catcher that may be available is Benito Santiago.

No Benito. He's horrible and he's signed for 2 years.

The sox should go after Kendall. With Frank out for awhile [probably] the Sox need an OBP guy to help offset Frank.

Oh, don't jump to conclusions here. I was not advocating acquiring Santiago. I just threw another name into the discussion.

We would not have to worry about adding a catcher if we did not include Olivo in that trade. But we have Ben Davis.

My bad. I thought you were suggesting him. Benito and the 'roid allegations just don't sit well with me.
