September 4, 200421 yr His obp is not to exciting though. It's in the high 360s, that's not bad at all. Most impressive is the Billy Beane favorite of having extra base hits, walks, and strikeouts in order. Reed has 20, 22, 22 which is very close. That's impressive.

How do you think only 22 walks is good?

September 4, 200421 yr There were reports that the mariners wanted borchard, but kw mentioned reed and they jumped at it. First time I heard of it. All the reports I heard said that Seattle wanted Crede, not Borchard, and KW didn't want to give the Mariners two of his everday players. Before the Seattle trade KW came out and said Borchard was untouchable. I don't if this was to increase his trade value, or JR didn't want to give up on a 5 million dollar investment. I've never heard of Seattle wanting Borchard.

My point was that he was hitting out of the three hole and therefore his focus probably changed somewhat from "on base" to "driving in runs". You were complaining about his low walk total (which wasn't really that low) so I pointed out that perhaps that was not his focus. Should he move back to the leadoff spot or the two-hole, I am sure his approach would change somewhat to better fit that role. To answer your other question, he could not be a #3 hitter in the majors now, no. Could he be in 3-5 years? no one knows....... but it can happen. Don Mattingly and Rafael Palmeiro are two shining examples of very good young hitters with little power that learned to hit for power AFTER they reached the big leagues. In fact, Mattingly only had 37 minor league HR's in 4 1/2 seasons. Palmeiro hit 28 in 2 1/2 seasons (college draftee) and didn't hit more than 15 HR until he had spent 4 years in the Majors. No one is saying Reed will hit like Mattingly or Palmeiro, but his sweet swing and plate discipline remind many of those two when they were still in the minors.
