Seattle/Reed

Old Socks

Recommended Posts

Reed was hitting I think .273 down with Tacoma so its not like he's been lighting things up.  I'm starting to think the Sox may of been wise dealing him.  However, I still like the fact that he does all the little things.

Jas, I think you got your numbers mixed up. He was hitting around there when he was here. Here's his numbers from Tacoma and if he's doing this with bad wrists, it is amazing.. :o

Reed:

BA (.304) SLG (.457) G (59) AB (230) R (40) H (70) 2B (10) 3B (5) HR (5) RBI (36) BB (22) SO (22) SB (13) CS (2) E (3)

His obp is not to exciting though. ;)

It's in the high 360s, that's not bad at all. Most impressive is the Billy Beane favorite of having extra base hits, walks, and strikeouts in order. Reed has 20, 22, 22 which is very close. That's impressive.

I thought his obp was lower because i saw that he only had 22 walks while batting .306. I did not go and look at his stats.

How do you think only 22 walks is good?

You've proved it time and time again. However, you are intelligent at times. Heads is just obsessed with your mom lately. Gotta tell momma to stop returning those love letters she has been getting.

For a supposed number lead-off or 2 hitter in the majors it is not  good. Mediocore.

Until a week ago, he was hitting 3rd in the batting order, not first or second. 20 extra base hits in only 59 games hints that perhaps his focused changed somewhat due to his spot in the order.

There were reports that the mariners wanted borchard, but kw mentioned reed and they jumped at it.

First time I heard of it. All the reports I heard said that Seattle wanted Crede, not Borchard, and KW didn't want to give the Mariners two of his everday players. Before the Seattle trade KW came out and said Borchard was untouchable. I don't if this was to increase his trade value, or JR didn't want to give up on a 5 million dollar investment. I've never heard of Seattle wanting Borchard.

I am saying in the majors he will be a lead-off or 2 hitter not the minors. Can he honestly be a three hitter in the majors?

Isn't the guy still hitting .306 with two bad wrists?

Damn, an outfield of Reed-Rowand-Lee would be awesome. Reed would be able to lead off, Rowand hitting second. Oh well, I still like Freddy and Big Ben.

My point was that he was hitting out of the three hole and therefore his focus probably changed somewhat from "on base" to "driving in runs". You were complaining about his low walk total (which wasn't really that low) so I pointed out that perhaps that was not his focus. Should he move back to the leadoff spot or the two-hole, I am sure his approach would change somewhat to better fit that role.

To answer your other question, he could not be a #3 hitter in the majors now, no. Could he be in 3-5 years? no one knows....... but it can happen. Don Mattingly and Rafael Palmeiro are two shining examples of very good young hitters with little power that learned to hit for power AFTER they reached the big leagues. In fact, Mattingly only had 37 minor league HR's in 4 1/2 seasons. Palmeiro hit 28 in 2 1/2 seasons (college draftee) and didn't hit more than 15 HR until he had spent 4 years in the Majors.

No one is saying Reed will hit like Mattingly or Palmeiro, but his sweet swing and plate discipline remind many of those two when they were still in the minors.
