Valdez called up/Garcia to start Wed

To me, there's just no reason to play Grilli over Diaz.

Rotoworld agrees with you.

Jason Grilli - S - White Sox

Jason Grilli pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs and eight hits to win in Texas today.

Grilli has a 6.48 ERA in three starts, but it looks like the White Sox plan to keep him in the rotation and send Felix Diaz to the pen after Freddy Garcia returns. We don't get it. Sep. 6 - 5:47 pm et

Rotoworld must be run by Diaz's parents.....it's a total lovefest for him there.

Of course, Diaz should be starting...

We cannot just concede the season at this point.  It isn't the professional thing to do.  Freddy coming back is the right decision.  I think Grilli/Diaz is a wash.  Keep in mind Diaz's last start was against the lowly Mariners.

I don't know why people refer to the Mariner's offesne as lowly. The Seattle club has a good hitting team. Ichiro, smirking Boone, Edgar M, Ibanez, et al. Diaz did a really great job no matter who the opponent was especially considering our other fifth starters. Grilli impressed me with how he battled back from trouble. He didn't groove one like so many others. Starter material I don't know, but long relief yes. Maybe Adkins will get a starting opportunity someday?

Diaz has more potential than does Grilli, is more likely to contribute to the team next year, and is currently pitching comparably to Grilli.  To me, there's just no reason to play Grilli over Diaz.

Absolutely, Diaz can be a 4th or 5th starter in future years for the White Sox, I can't see Grilli being that in the long - term. Personally I'd shut down Garcia for the season, and keep Diaz and Grilli in the rotation for the rest of the year with Buerhle, Contreras and Garland.

I know what you mean i have never heard them talking s*** about him.

All it will take is one more Diaz-hosted home run derby for everyone at Soxtalk to jump off his bandwagon. There are way too many knee-jerk reactions sometimes.

I will feel the same way, i feel that he will help us in the bull pen not as a starter.

Getting back to Garcia.

Maybe he has contract incentives that he wants to meet.

If he shows ANY sign of arm trouble, they will yank him pretty quick I'm sure.

Back to Valdez... Am I the only one who sees his OBP and has no interest in him being here? If the guy isn't going to get on base either, I would rather have Jose.

Pretty much, he's up for his fielding. He's Ozzie's type of SS, but if he's only going to hit around .240 starting without taking a walk, than yes he won't be a starter in this league.

Good teams know how to create value for the future, just as any good business does. Valentin is like an employee who has already given 2-weeks' notice. You're not going to send him to the professional development seminar New York. Valdez is like the college intern who got the job as a favor to someone. He doesn't show much promise, but hey, you never know, see what he can do. Maybe he turns into Jose Vizcaino. If he turns into nothing, you're still no worse off than you would have been playing Valentin.

My take is that Valdez is up for his glove, and for the coaches to get a first-hand look at his at-bats so they can figure out what they want him to work on over the winter, whether at winter ball or just on his own/coming into town to work in the cages. It's always better to see for yourself than to go off scouting reports and reputation.

Valdez is supposed to be a "high energy" guy. As far as his OBP goes, he's been able to get on base last yr and this with more regularity than in previous yrs. this coincides w/ him and Ozzie talking during spring training '03.

My guess is Valdez should be able to hit for a higher avg and a have similar OBP as Uribe. Add in the fact that Valdez should be able to bunt and steal bases better than both, and I think Valdez has value. And Valdez puts the ball in play, whereas Jose often only sees 3 pitches and is back on the bench.
