September 7, 200421 yr KW has wanted Russ Ortiz for a few years. I'm willing to bet he goes after him.
September 7, 200421 yr Author Jaret Wright is a free-agent? KW should give him serious consideration. No thank you. The guy has had one year in the last 4 or 5 years. He has Braves fluke written all over him.

September 7, 200421 yr No thank you. The guy has had one year in the last 4 or 5 years. He has Braves fluke written all over him. Totally Agree...Jaret Wright would be best served to stay with the Braves or he most likely watch his career talespin back downward...Leo Mazzone is a magician with mediocre pitchers
September 7, 200421 yr Russ Ortiz = too many walks. He looks like what Garland will become. Have you seen his numbers since the trade talk between the Braves and Sox? Russ Ortiz=Shiznit. I'd take him as our #3 in a heartbeat. But I do agree it would be very annoying to hear Hawk say "Come on Russ, no walks" about 12 times a game.
September 7, 200421 yr Author Same goes for Pavano, but I bet you'd be ready and willing to sign him. I have no interest in signing Pavano to a big money FA deal. He has had some OK years, and this is by far his biggest year, which scares me. But for perspective here is Jaret Wright. 2004 is the first year since 1999 he has been over 100 IP. His era's going back starting with 2003 are 7.35, 15.71, 6.52, 4.70, and 6.06. This was the first year he has won more than 3 games since 1999. And finally his BB/9 was over 5 every year since 1999. One good year in one of the best pitchers parks in baseball doesn't erase all of that for me.

September 7, 200421 yr What about Derek Lowe? Ever since the trade of Nomah, his numbers have been pretty good. I think he's something like 4-1 with a 3.50 to 4 ERA. And he finally stopped walking everyone. He's had some good years and is heating it up again at the end of this year. Plus, I think we could get him cheaper than we would have last year, if he had been a free agent. He might be a good number 3.

I think he will be one of the sleepers in free agency. But i would not rely on him as are third starter fourth at best.
September 7, 200421 yr I would like Matt morris. He hasn't had his best stuff this year but I still think he is a great fit here. Imagine Garcia, Buhrle, Morris, Contraes, Garland

But i would not rely on him as are third starter fourth at best. I agree. If we signed Lowe for a good price ($4-$5 million), he fits in nicely on the staff as a #3 guy. Essentially, next season the Sox would have 1 #2 guy (Garcia), 3 #3 guys (Buehrle, Lowe, Contreras) and 1 #4 guy (Garland), which puts them way ahead of most other teams in the league. However, I wouldn't spend more than $5 million on Lowe. And that might not be possible. I still think Radke should be our #1 target. And if we can't get him, we should run up the price for the Twins so they can't re-sign Koskie or have to trade off someone early. We shouldn't be out to beat the Twins. We should be out to destroy the Twins. Destroy them in such a way that they'll plead for contraction.
September 7, 200421 yr Jaret Wright is kind of interesting...he is having a very good year, but I heard or read somewhere that when he was tooling around in the minor leagues for a couple years that he picked up a splitter, and that has been a big reason why he has had this success. I may be wrong in this...due to my age...but IIRC, wasn't it the splitter that Clemens learned that turned his career around? I may be wrong, and he may have had the splitter the whole time...but I thought I had heard that somewhere. Anyways, I don't think he will make it out to FA...I do think the Braves will resign him...but if he did, and we could get him for $4-5 mill, I do think it would be a good signing Anyways, screw this Morris and Radke and Lowe talk. I say we sign two of them, 1 of them being Pedro, and we go for the whole f***ing thing.

September 7, 200421 yr Sign me up for Lowe, but i wannt PEDRO. I like lowe for one because he is much more realistic.
September 7, 200421 yr Guys, Derek Lowe's agent is Scott Boras, so we can forget about it. Also, D. Lowe is a Michigan boy and the talk already is the Tigers will go after him and get him. Let's look at it realistically, from what we know. KW has had a stiffie for Russ Ortiz for as long as we can remember. Seems to me he's target #1. I agree about going after some Twins guys, although they seem to keep plugging holes very effectively. They want to re-sign Radke, and it would be great if the Sox could steal Radke. Also, a guy like Radke gives the Sox a real mix and match rotation, making it difficult for opposing hitters to get their timing in a 4 game series. You have Garcia and Contreras who are more power guys, Buehrle and another guy who pounds the strike zone and changes speeds, and Garland. I still think they'll go after Ortiz first, and I suspect Catalanatto is on their wish list too ... perhaps along with a 3B. Oh, and shortstop.

KW was talking to the Dodgers about trading PK for him back before the season started. I hope KW still has an eye on him for next year.
