Doug Mientkiewicz - 1B - BOS

According to the Associated Press, the Red Sox will receive an A ball prospect and cash from the Mets for Doug Mientkiewicz in a deal that could be announced on Wednesday.

I had to read it twice before I got to rotoworlds comments -- I was thinking the same thing.. The cash is going the wrong way in that deal

Magglio Ordonez may be interested in joining the Rangers, but he won't be a DH, agent Scott Boras said yesterday. "Between him, Richard Hidalgo and Kevin Mench, Magglio would certainly be the best right fielder of all three," Boras said. Actually, it would be Hidalgo, but a healthy Ordonez likely would be an upgrade over Mench in left field. The Rangers still figure to show interest in Ordonez as an outfielder if he proves he's healthy. They've joined the Orioles, Tigers and Mets in requesting his medical records. The Cubs and Blue Jays also have some level of interest. Jan. 26 - 3:38 am et

According to Newsday, the Yankees will sign either Tom Goodwin or Doug Glanville to serve as a backup center fielder. Goodwin would be the less bad option, but it'd be a case of poor planning by the Yankees if either of these two begin the year on the 25-man roster. At least there's little chance either would get signficant at-bats. Bubba Crosby might begin the season in the minors to make room for Goodwin/Glanville, but he'd still be the choice to inherit playing time should anyone get hurt. Any any serious injuries would lead to a trade, of course. Jan. 26 - 4:42 am et

They have exceeded us in creativity.

Delgado gets 4M/05, 13.5M/06, 14.5M/07, 16M/08.

There is a complex 5th yr option.  If he plays at an MVP caliber level all 4 yrs he can earn 16M/09.  If he fails to do that but is a LCS MVP or WS MVP he can still earn the 16M/09.  If he fails to do that as well he'll either earn 12M/09 or be bought out for 4M.

I doubt very much he will achieve what he needs to earn 16M/09.

If he does Cub fans should just shoot themselves because the Marlins will have won the WS twice in this decade.  So this really looks more like a

60M/5 yr deal.  That's pretty savy of Loria.  Congrats!

Yet another signing that leaves me scratching my head why not the White Sox?

I know you all love Konerko but he is no Delgado.  Nor is Maggs.  We were willing to give this same $ to Maggs but not to Delgado?  This is a contract we could have gotten done.  Delgado runs much better than Koney. The Sox would have saved 4M in the first year.  A new Koney contract is likely to cost an avg of 10-11M/yr.  So your paying a litte more for a much great boost in production.

Loria get's my vote for the best signing of the off-season.  He signed a perenial MVP caliber player to a price comparable to lesser talented players like Drew.

The White Sox had a trade worked out for Delgado last season and HE didn't want to come here. He refused to waive his no trade clause.

There were positive messages coming out Magglio Ordonez's camp after their meeting meeting with the Tigers, according to the Detroit Free Press. Ordonez reportedly told Ilitch that the Tigers were "on the board" as a team he'd consider playing for, said the newspaper, while agent Scott Boras said the Tigers "have taken the right first step." Ordonez is reportedly looking for a deal similar to Carlos Delgado, a four-year, $52-million pact.

Looks like Maggs had a good meeting with the Tigers.

It looks like no Sosa in NY. Newsday reports that none of Minaya's subs want Sosa & the fan backlash in calls to the Mets over the possibility has bee too great to ignore.

It seems to suggest they have cooled their interest as well on Maggs. But I think if he can prove he's able to play the Mets will jump in.

It also appears Barry Larkin will retire, there is an article from today or yesterday where he's quoted as saying he's leaning toward retirement big time.

Ahh no s*** sherlock...I bring you back to our conversation the other day.

How did Larkin put it, something like the fat lady hasn't sung yet but she is warming up her pipes in the back room.

Too bad. If something could've been worked out - and I personally believe the White Sox aggressively inquired - it's my feeling he could have fit in and helped.

I'm convinced they were one of the teams talking to Aurilia as well. Trying to think like White Sox management ... they want a veteran presence in that middle IF. Which is smart.

Now it remains to be seen what, if anything, they can get done. And when.

Go eat a Thin Mint.

Seattle signed 22 yrs. old Cuban shortstop Betancourt and designated Aaron Looper. Dont know much about this SS they signed.

Betancourt

Mientkiewicz to the Mets is official...

"Mientkiewicz fills first base void"

The Mets acquired the former Gold Glove first baseman from the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday for minor league first baseman Ian Bladergroen.
Tigers | Trammell Hopeful Ordonez Will Sign - from www.KFFL.com

Wed, 26 Jan 2005 09:49:09 -0800

The Associated Press reports Detroit Tigers manager Alan Trammell is hopeful free-agent OF Magglio Ordonez (White Sox) will sign with the team. "He would be a great addition to our club, or any club. In our game, you go on track record, and he's been an All-Star and a .300 hitter who drives in well over 100 RBIs a year," Trammell said. "The lesson I learned is, thinking you're close to signing somebody and actually signing somebody are two different things."

Good luck with that Detroit! He's still injured. They would be stupid to sign him.

The O's could be considered off-season winners for not making any bone headed moves, and not offering to big contracts to players who don't deserve it. They need to develop that young pitching of theirs as much as possible.

Pirates signed RHP Rick White to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Rick White AND Todd Ritchie? Impressive

They are still considered one of the worst run baseball teams in all of baseball by me no matter what happens.

Oh yeah, that's definitely true. Angelos would have to be one of the worst owners in baseball, and some of their moves over the past few seasons have been mind boggling to say the least.

Does Dave Littlefield want to become the next GM of the White Sox or something?

The pursuit of free agent Magglio Ordoñez largely will be determined by the medical data Orioles doctors are supposed to receive by the end of the week. Baltimore wants to be assured Ordoñez is healthy before offering a long-term deal.

"I think it's going to take some time," Beattie said of negotiations with agent Scott Boras.

The Detroit Tigers met with Ordoñez on Monday and appear to be aggressive suitors. Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski declined to comment on the specifics of the meeting but said they have received all the medical information they had requested from Boras. Beattie said the Orioles would be interested in meeting with Ordoñez and watching him work out once they view the medical information.

"We hope to have by the end of this week all the medical information we need," Beattie said. "Then it will be determined by the doctors what the next step will be."

The key word in that piece is SUPPOSED. Of course that'll be after Bora$$ sees a suitable offer from them first. ;)

EDIT: 100 pages on this thread. Boo yah!!! :notworthy :headbang

So the M's want their .230 hitter back;

A source told the Seattle Times that the Mariners are interested in trading for Mike Cameron.

The Mets shouldn't need to reduce payroll with Carlos Delgado in Florida, so there would be little point to downgrading from Cameron in right field. Still, they might have some interest in a Randy Winn-for-Cameron deal. Raul Ibanez for Cameron would be another possibility, but Ibanez isn't much cheaper than Cameron and is far worse defensively. Cork Boy Watch;

The Orioles are having internal discussions about whether to pursue a Sammy Sosa trade, the Washington Post reports.

If the money can be worked out, the Orioles could trade Jorge Julio and Jay Gibbons to the Cubs for Sosa and Kyle Farnsworth. It's the money that's the big problem, though. It's still pretty likely that Sosa will spend one final season with the Cubs. Jan. 27 - 4:41 am et
