November 19, 200421 yr If the Cubs balk at him offering himself, and no other team seems interested, what would you guys think of a Spring Training invite for him? He'll probably get a major league contract from some team though.
November 19, 200421 yr I would definately give him an invite to spring training, and an incentive laiden contract.
November 19, 200421 yr He'll definitely get a contract. I wouldn't mind if the Sox signed him, though. (After checking him out, of course.) His agent already said something about 'not looking to break the bank' -- odd thing to announce in November, but good to know.
November 19, 200421 yr His agent also said that he would rather play for the Cubs over the sox.. so I am sure if the Cubs offered hom something we woudl have to cough up some cash for a guy who lost his job to Kim??

I know, But there's no guarantee they're interested in him. If they are, we probably don't stand a chance, but I won't lose any sleep over Mantei. I'm not saying the Sox should get into any bidding war over this guy.
November 19, 200421 yr Author His agent also said that he would rather play for the Cubs over the sox.. so I am sure if the Cubs offered hom something we woudl have to cough up some cash for a guy who lost his job to Kim?? If the Cubs offer him something, don't offer him anything! That's why the original post said "if the cubs balk at him and no one else seems interested"... If the Sox are the only team to offer anything, then he has no choice. I'd offer an ST invite with an incentive laden contract as soon as possible to coax him to sign early if he's not looking to break the bank.

Even if the Sox aren't the only ones, he might prefer playing in Chicago to elsewhere. When you think about it, it kind of sucks to be him if the Cubs don't have interest -- you then have to ask, Coors or Coors East for my comeback season?
November 19, 200421 yr No thanks...I'd rather have Farnsworth. You thought Koch was bad...this guy blew more leads and gave up more game-winning homers in a 3 week stretch than Koch has in all of his time with the sox. Maybe a change would be good for him...but he looked AWFUL this past year. Mantei = Koch2
November 19, 200421 yr Come on now.. Koch had some good games b4 he got here. So did Mantei... I'm talkin Koch in a Sox uni Koch.
November 19, 200421 yr Do some people not even look at numbers before making posting their thoughts on a player? Mantei is very, very injury prone...that's a well known fact everywhere...but he'll be cheap, so if he does get injured, it will not be a huge loss. Also, in 03, he was 5-4 with 29 saves, a 2.62 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, a K/9 of over 11, a K/BB of 3.78, a BB/9 of just under 3, allowed 1 homer every 9 innings, and a .191 BAA. I haven't check his OPSA, but I'm sure that was pretty solid too. If we could get this guy for $1 mill, he could come in here and be an absolute stud for us. If he were to come back healthy, he is like the perfect guy that KW and co. could go after...he has closed before, so he can close, but he'd come in here and mainly be a setup man or a middle reliever for us. Low-risk high-reward...this is KW's bread and butter right here. Do it Kenny.

Ya, makes sense to me. Cubs have a wide open closers spot, Sox have Shingo until they sign a big name closer or Shingo fails.

November 20, 200421 yr Like I've mentioned a few times. He could be very similar to the Tom Gordon pickup. That was a great pickup by the Sox too. Flash was a very solid arm out of the pen.
November 20, 200421 yr I think it would be a good idea to pick him up if the cubs pass. Nothing wrong with signing him even if we do pick up a better arm in the pen. He can push Adkins and Diaz for a bullpen slot.
November 20, 200421 yr That was a great pickup by the Sox too. Flash was a very solid arm out of the pen. I saw a lot of negative posts about the Flash pick up when it happened. Too old, injury prone, etc. It turned out very well for the Sox. Mantei's worth a shot.
