You may not be able to recognize all of the Cubs players at Wrigley Field without a scorecard this season.

 

The organization has decided to remove the names from the backs of the Cubs' home jerseys in an effort to revisit early baseball tradition.

 

Either that, or equipment managers were becoming increasingly frustrated in their attempts to fit "Garciaparra" on the back of Nomar's uniform.

 

"We thought we were in the clear when Mark Grudzielanek left [to sign with the Cardinals]," quipped John McDonough, the Cubs' marketing and broadcasting vice president.

 

The organization, which hosts its 20th annual Cubs Convention this weekend at the Chicago Hilton & Towers, plans to continue stitching the last names on the back of the road uniforms.

 

The 1960 White Sox were the first major-league team to place players' names on the back of their jerseys.

Cubs management must have been tired of fans sporting "WOODS" and "MADDOX" jerseys.

 

Who is willing to bet this PR move is to offset Wrigley Field's newest corporate billboards behind homeplate.

Yeah, the Tribune Co isn't fooling anybody. Advertising on the scoreboard, in the dugouts, and now behind the plate permanently. Nice touch boys.

I gotta say, as a baseball purist, I love the idea, and I with the Sox would revisit it.

I heard about this in the morning before school. I can't say I don't like it but I'd personally rather have the names on the backs.

They are trying to align themselves with the Yankees and Red Sox, teams that have actually won something. They aren't fooling anyone.....except for their 'fan base'.

It's not a bad idea, i like revisiting old traditions...but i find this quite ironic with the new advertising gimmicks at Wrigley being introduced.

I like no names on the back of home jerseys. A true fan would already know who they are. Road jerseys should still have the names on the back. I think the Red Sox do this.

 

Granted this is a biased crowd, but I bet i could throw numbers out to you guys and you would get the player's name right 95% of the time, if not more.

Peolpe it is all about cost savings. Say there are 20 jerseys per player for the season = 500 jerseys. Coaches get 9 (3 per model for the season) = 15

 

515 jerseys * cost to put names on $30 = $15,450. There is Billy Williams salary to coach first base.

 

Oh and also, NOW EVERYONE'S JERSEY IS OUTDATED SO EVERYONE NEEDS A NEW ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
