Indians placed outfielder Juan Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

''He's frustrated,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''He believes this is the best thing to do right now. It's a long season. We want to give him a chance to get back to 100 percent.'' Gonzalez last played on Sunday, so he'll be eligible to come off the DL on April 11. We wouldn't count on him being ready then, though. Mar. 31 - 1:58 pm et

Grady Sizemore - OF - CLE

 

 

Indians recalled outfielder Grady Sizemore from Triple-A Buffalo.

We didn't think it'd be too long before Sizemore returned. In fact, it was only four days. He'll start in center until Juan Gonzalez is activated. Coco Crisp will slide over to left and Casey Blake will play right. The Indians could use Ryan Ludwick in his place versus lefties, with Crisp going back to center, but he'll still be worth having active in AL-only leagues for at least the first week of the season.  Mar. 31 - 1:55 pm et

Devil Rays acquired 2B Nick Green from the Braves for RHP Jorge Sosa.

The Devil Rays just had to have a backup infielder. This gives them one, but Green hit only .273/.312/.386 in 264 at-bats last season and he's yet to demonstrate he can be an asset at any position other than second base. He'll probably turn out to be a decent utilityman in time, but rather than trade for him, the Rays should have just went with Luis Ordaz or Shane Halter for a month or two until B.J. Upton cracked the starting lineup. Then they would have had a perfectly useful utilityman by the name of Alex Gonzalez. Mar. 31 - 1:47 pm et

"I'm going to make the Toronto Blue Jays pay every cent of my salary."

 

The Jays are on the hook for Koch's $950,000 US salary. If a team had an injury and needed an arm, it could add Koch at the prorated major-league minimum of $320,000.

 

"To be released after four outings? What's four outings in the spring? Nothing," Koch said. "They can pay my gas money for my car, they can pay to fill up my 240-gallon tank for my 30-foot Pursuit, they can gas up my jet boat and our three jet skis."

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Juan Gonzalez couldn't even make it to opening day with the Cleveland Indians.

 

The 35-year-old slugger was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday by the Indians, who will go north to begin the 2005 season and leave the oft-injured outfielder behind in Florida to rehab his strained right hamstring.

 

Gonzalez has missed 301 of a possible 486 games the past three seasons with a variety of injuries, primarily to his back.

 

"He's frustrated with his body," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "But he understands this is the right thing to do."

 

To replace Gonzalez on the roster, the Indians recalled outfielder Grady Sizemore. The 22-year-old was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday when Wedge announced that Gonzalez, a two-time AL MVP with 434 career home runs, would be his starting right fielder.

Devil Rays claimed outfielder Michael Restovich off waivers from the Twins.

This helps take the sting out of the poor trade earlier today, assuming the Rays will actually use Restovich. Unfortunately, he's a right-handed hitter like DH Josh Phelps, and the decision to move Alex Sanchez to center means he probably won't get to compete for a starting job in the outfield. If Sanchez was still playing right, Restovich could have overtaken him at some point. Now they'd have to move Carl Crawford back to center to open up a starting job. Since he could hit 20 homers if he gets 400 at-bats, Restovich is a good $1 pick in AL-only leagues. Just don't expect much in the early going.

The Tigers have decided to keep both Bobby Higginson and Nook Logan as reserve outfielders.

That probably means they'll carry just 11 pitchers. Higginson rebounded well over the last week to keep his roster spot. That he gives the Tigers a left-handed hitter behind three right-handed-hitting outfielders was a big point in his favor. Higginson is worth only $1-$2 in AL-only leagues.

Royals announced the retirement of RHP Kevin Appier.

The most underrated pitcher of the 90s. Appier somehow was just a one-time All-Star and he only once placed in the top five in the Cy Young balloting, but he did win an ERA crown and finish in the top five four times. Among active pitchers, he was 12th in wins, 16th in ERA and 10th in strikeouts. On a Royals team that often didn't have a lot going for it, he was always fun to watch.

I tried to avoid all Twins & Cubs, so I don't have to root for them.
