X-rays on Bobby Crosby's left wrist detected no break. He might be ready to play on Opening Day.

''It's swollen and discolored,'' trainer Larry Davis said. ''But's it's not broken. He has a contussion of the hand and we're just double checking the X-ray results with the MRI.'' Maybe Crosby won't be ready to play at the start of next week, but it looks like he'll avoid the disabled list.

At least one person wasn't happy with the Tigers' decision to keep Bobby Higginson over Marcus Thames.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon made a surprise adjustment Friday, moving Tike Redman into the No. 3 spot in the batting order.

 

Jason Bay was expected to bat third after hitting .282 with 26 homers and 82 RBI last season as the NL Rookie of the Year. But when Bay missed most of the exhibition schedule with a bruised wrist bone, McClendon liked how Redman adjusted to the third spot.

Byung-Hyun Kim gave up eight runs in one-third of an inning against the Rangers today in his Rockies debut.

That's one way to make an impression. Kim said he was healthy and ready to pitch again Saturday if called on, but added, ''if it doesn't get any better than tonight, I should just retire.'' Since he's owed $6 million, it's safe to asssume he'll be released before he seriously considers retirement. The Rockies won't give up on him before the start of the season, but if keeps getting bombed, they could ask him how he'd feel about working through his troubles at Triple-A Colorado Springs.

And some of you guys actually wanted this bum. :headshake What a complete and utter waste of $6 million dollars. I bet the Rockies wish they had Charles Johnson and Chris Narveson back.

Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon indicated today that Rob Mackowiak would open the season in a utility role.

Mackowiak will still get plenty of playing time against right-handers, stealing at-bats away from both Tike Redman and Ty Wigginton. If the Pirates keep him, he'll probably eventually find himself in the lineup versus all righties.

Tigers acquired RHP Matt Ginter from the Mets for LHP Steve Colyer.

A nice move by the Tigers. Colyer has plenty of long-term potential, but they could have lost him for nothing when they sent him through waivers this week. Ginter is an upgrade in middle reliever over Gary Knotts. He probably won't be worth owning in AL-only leagues, but he should help Detroit.

 

Gas Can Ginter is back in the ALC.

Ben Grieve, released by the Pirates yesterday, will sign a contract today to return to the Chicago Cubs.

The Rangers had interest, but couldn't clear a spot on their Triple-A roster. Grieve is expected to report to Triple-A Iowa, with a chance to make it back to Chicago as the fifth outfielder.

Kevin Brown will miss his first scheduled start of the season because of a stiff back. He could go on the disabled list.

That Brown pitched in a major league game yesterday complicates things. The Yankees would like to simply have him switch rotation spots with Jaret Wright, who wasn't scheduled to pitch until April 15. However, if Brown goes on the DL, he won't be able to pitch until April 17. The Yankees will likely make a decision after Brown meets with his physical therapist in Georgia this afternoon.
