Tony pena resigns...

Featured Replies

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Tony Pena has resigned as manager of the Kansas City Royals, a team spokesman said.

The decision came shortly after a 3-1 loss in Toronto dropped the Royals to 8-25. The Royals have dropped 16 of their last 19.

Wow, props to Tony for abandoning that sinking ship.

I feel bad for the guy. He is a professional and a class guy. Hopefully he'll have better luck with whatever he does next.

Royals fans (what little there are) have wanted this guy gone for awhile now. I guess he was making alot of bone-headed decisions.

you are only as smart as your options and Pena had none

Royal fans consider their 83 win 03 season a success. :headshake

It's weird because I didn't feel like Pena was the problem there at all. I guess I sure don't know though. I was surprised that he resigned. Expectations were low for this year anyhow, it's not like they are playing below them.

Think he'd be interested in taking over as bench coach for Harold??

He must have become eligible to leave the Witness Relocation Program.... :D

Like GUARANTEEING (

Well you almost have to feel bad for a guy. It would of been impossible to win with that team, especially with that pitching staff. I mean who in the heck opens up their rotation with 5 lefties... :fight

Their GM is who needs to quit.

The Gm can only do so much. Ownership has always been the problem there and always will be.

Picks for New Manager? Personally I'm going with the small girl with the glasses in the Royals ad on MLB.TV. ;)

The one who thinks getting the wave going is the key to baseball games and pretends to understand Pena? I'd take her over Manuel. :P

I was thinking Manuel might be a good fit. He has the patience of a saint, and he'd need it.

It wouldn't surprise me if Tony Pena ends up back in the White Sox organization. He's close with both KW and Guillen.

He may need a break at this point though, and might not resurface until '06.

KW said in the past that he'd find a minor league managers spot for Pena if he became available. But finding a spot for him on the major league coaching staff is not a bad idea.

My guess is it'll be a long time ... if ever ... that he gets another shot at managing a big league team. I think it was more than the lack of talent there, something wasn't clicking in the clubhouse and certainly with fundamental baseball. KC has good baseball fans, they know the fundamentals and when their team shows lack of ability in basic skills, they come down hard on the manager.

But yeah, their talent level is awful, no doubt about that. They have gone backwards.

I almost don't blame him. they lose 104 games, then don't bring anybody in to improve the club, plus I'm almost sure they'll be trading Mike Sweeney, they've only had him this long because they did OK in 2003, and the way things look, they'll lose even more games this year.

Tony would make for a great bench coach

I remember Harold saying he wanted to not be the bench coach anymore last year and if they could talk Tony Pena into it I think it would be huge for the Sox...I don't know if Tony would want to do that though... :huh

He might do it for a year. It's an active job and his aforementioned relationship with Ozzie could help. I think a catcher for a bench coach also makes a lot of sense

Tony Pena was making some boneheaded decisions this year. I am surprise that he risgned. Maybe he knew he was being fired, and fired himself first

Interesting.

He pulled some magic 2 years ago but they just blow right now.

I really do think the Royals will be a good team in a few years. They remind me on the mid 90's Twins. Just keep throwing those young player up in the majors and let them grow at the majorleague leve. Of course the Twins had Tom Kelly as skipper. A much better manager than Pena
