Not saying they are amazing, but he had sick numbers out of high school.  Lets give him a chance at the very least.  I wish I could find my stuff from the 03 draft but I can't.

My bad -- I hope I didn't come off as saying that you thought the numbers were dynomite, I was just making a general comment that they aren't very good.

I'd like to see the Sox grab him, strictly from a numbers standpoint.  133 K's in 82 IP, and just 16 BB's.

He's listed at only 5'11".

I WANT BLEICH!

It might sound like a "stretch" to you, but to the Sox it's not, and I have complete faith in our scouting department.  They do a great job.  IIRC, Jeremy Reed was a "stretch" in round 2 when we drafted him, and he turned out to be very worthy of that selection.

Any how many have failed as well. An average pitcher selected this soon is sort of a stretch, even they will admit it. His numbers arent impressive and are not as good as some that are still on the board, I guarantee you that they might "see" something in this kid, because it sure isnt his numbers.

Hmm -- looks like he wants first round $$$ to get him out of going to Stanford. They say he's got a real nasty breaking ball, though -- I'd love to see the Sox make a grab at a first-round talent in the fifth round. I doubt we'll see it, but I'll hope so.

Whisler was the same way. Awful numbers, but the Sox loved his arm. Liotta was a guy that many here were like who the hell is he. I remember I couldn't find any info on the guy for the longest time.

Guys that have slipped:

Jordan Danks still- not surprising at all, but some team will take the risk.

Justin Bristow- HS SS

David Adams- SS/3B signed with Virginia. Likely to go there.

Cody Satterwhite- Old Miss commit RHP, command issues

Jacob Marceaux- RHP, McNeese

Anthony Varvaro- RHP, St. John's, small with 'electric stuff'

Robert Ray- RHP, Texas A&M 90-93 fastball

Brian Matusz- LHP, HS, high projection, great control of curve

Jeremy Hellickson- RHP, HS (Iowa), first-round stuff but commit to LSU

Anthony Varvaro- RHP, St. John's, small with 'electric stuff'

He just had Tommy John surgery.

Yeah, the only thing we were sure of was that he missed an entire year of baseball. That really made us have a lot of confidence in the pick, lol. We thought we drafted a no-name guy with arm problems.

I'm with Dan, Hellickson would look awful sweet in the 4th round if he's there. If he were in a warm weather state he'd of gone earlier. He's projectable and has good stuff, not the greatest FB in the world (at least not when scouts saw him) but he should fill out a bit.

Dont forget that Gio slipped as well because of his family as well. Im sure they may have seen something in this guy. But the truth of it is, this is nothing but a crap shoot anyway, otherwise Borchard would be the best hitter on the sox this year.

I like this guy a whole lot

Jacob Marceaux- RHP, McNeese

There goes my boy. Nice pick Tampa.

Brooks is a BAD pick need more help than he can provide

I like that pick. BA says he's already got a real good feel for a fastball and changeup, and a developing curve. Good to see he learned the change before the curve.

Only reason he didn't go higher is because scouts rarely make trips up to Iowa and the one time they saw him his velocity wasn't quite there (he wasn't fully in gear yet).

One thing to note, the Sox rarely seem to draft guys from collegiate programs that are still in the college playoffs. I don't know if its planned or if its just a coincidence.

Plus, it seems that there shouldn't be too much stress on his arm if all he's been throwing (mainly) is a fastball and a changeup. If Tampa could slowly work in a curveball/slider, they might have found themselves a real gem here.

Cerb just mentioned the name Chris Getz. That could make a whole lot of sense here.

WHITE SOX SELECT Chris Getz

:headbang

Really nice pick here and Cerb, good call.
