This idea was brought up so I figured let's get it going. Stick anything about the minors in here that is noteworthy. Any interesting BA snippets, articles from local newspapers, or any little something about the minors you want to add can go here.

Felix Hernandez pitched another gem Tuesday, limiting Portland to three hits over six scoreless innings as the Rainiers posted a 2-0 victory.

The win was Tacoma's season-high seventh straight.

Hernandez (8-4) allowed just three singles and four walks while striking out seven. He retired the side in order just once, but allowed only one base runner past second and extended his scoreless streak to 15 1/3 innings.

In his last five starts, the 19-year-old right-hander is 3-1 with a 1.23 ERA, fanning 36 in 29 1/3 innings.

Sean Green and Masao Kida finished off the Rainiers' Pacific Coast League-leading eighth shutout with three hitless innings. Kida pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

Ryan Christianson accounted for Tacoma's offense with a two-run homer, his fifth, in the sixth inning off reliever Brian Sweeney (4-5). Sweeney come on after starter Tim Redding pitched four scoreless innings.

Portland did not get a hit after Wilson Valdez, Ben Johnson and Jon Knott had consecutive singles in the third inning.

Really good start for Stephen Drew in his pro-career:

8. Stephen Drew, ss, Diamondbacks (High Class A Lancaster)

If we heard one knock against Drew entering the 2004 draft, it was that scouts had very few opportunities to see Drew hit with wood. That's no longer an issue as Drew, beginning his pro career exactly one year from the day he was drafted, has gone 10-for-24 with a pair of home runs and eight RBIs in six games.

A note from BA about another stud pitcher in our division (future):

...Meanwhile, The Tigers promoted Justin Verlander to Double-A Erie after the second overall pick last June went 9-2, 1.67 for Lakeland, reeling off 12 consecutive starts of six-plus innings while allowing two or fewer earned runs. In addition to Verlander, the Tigers also moved second baseman Juan Francia to Erie. The 23-year-old Venezuela was batting .325/.399/.380 in 255 at-bats with 26 stolen bases.

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jun 26, 2005 -> 07:03 PM)
who is Scott Olson?

He started for the Marlins and looked pretty good throwing something like 5/1/3 innings while picking up his first major league victory. I have no idea if he's much of a prospect or not.

It's prime shopping season, so it's time to see what the shelves are stocked with.

This is an unusual market that comes at the trade deadline, one in which buyers and sellers are consumers of some sort.

The buyers are looking for services of the big-league variety, established players who can help them in their playoff push. The sellers are players on the futures market, looking for good Minor League prospects in return for dealing their big leaguers.

Just who are the top prospects the selling GMs might be oggling as the deadline nears? That's information nearly impossible to pry from the decision-makers, but some exploration can lead to some possibilities. The process goes something like this: Take a list of buyers, examine which ones have the richest farm systems, hone in on prospects who seem to be stuck, either by a Major Leaguer at their position or a logjam of talent throughout the system and, finally, take a look at positions that are often highly in demand (read: up the middle or on the mound).

With that in mind, here's a buying team-by-team look at Minor Leaguers who could be on the move by the end of July.

Atlanta: The Braves have some catching depth and everyone can use more catching. With Brian McCann already ahead of him on the depth chart and Jarrod Saltalamacchia's bat closing fast, Brayan Pena could hit the market. Pena got some big-league time in, and the Braves may try to cash in on his .370-12-57 year in Triple-A Richmond.

Baltimore: Almost no one is untouchable for the right price as the O's try to continue their surprising run. Pitching is always at a premium, and the Orioles actually have some depth there. Hayden Penn (now up in the bigs), John Maine (6-3, 3.24 ERA in 13 starts for Ottawa) and the recently recalled reliever Chris Ray might be dangled. Even 2003 first-round pick, outfielder Nick Markakis, could be had for the right price if Baltimore adopts a purely win-now attitude.

Boston: Kelly Shoppach ranks high on the list of stuck prospects, with captain Jason Varitek not going anywhere anytime soon. Shoppach got his first taste of the bigs recently, but for him to land a full-time job, he'll have to be traded, something the Sox may finally be willing to do in the tight AL East.

Florida: Teams in the market for pitching prospects are watching the Marlins' Double-A affiliate, the Carolina Mudcats, very closely. The Marlins won't easily part with any of the starters there, particularly Scott Olsen. Josh Johnson could be in the rotation by next year if he's not dealt and Yorman Bazardo and Logan Kensing have both been called up, albeit briefly. Teams most often inquire about Olsen and outfielder Jeremy Hermida, but both could be in Florida this year in a Dontrelle Willis/Miguel Cabrera-esque package move. Olsen could wind up being the relief support they need, keeping the Marlins off the trade market. If not, they may have to swallow hard and deal one of the other fine arms from their system.

Chicago (AL): Untouchables include Brian Anderson, Ryan Sweeney, Brandon McCarthy and Josh Fields, but the White Sox might be willing to part with some arms in their upper levels. Southpaw Arnie Munoz still should have some value as a lefty specialist, while maybe a starter like Sean Tracey could be wrested for the right price.

Good article. I don't think the all of big 4 are untouchable. BMac and Sweeney are likely not going anywhere. Fields probably doesn't carry too much value with his recent struggles, but I don't doubt KW would be willing to deal him. I personally think Anderson is up for trade. The outfield seems solid through at least 2006 barring a trade this offseason and he's going to be ready next year. An Anderson and Tracey package seems possible and should be attractive to other teams.

New Hot Sheet out. Chris Young got honorable mention. Justin Verlander is #1, looks like the Tigers finally have a prospect. Ryan Zimmerman, 05 draftee, is also already hitting well in AA.

I guess that Joel Zumaya and Curtis Granderson don't count?

I think if we have one untouchable in our org right now it is Chris Young. The kid skipped high A, and is looking at 30+ homers in AA in a big yard. He can play D, he runs, he can bunt, he Ks a lot but he also walks for a decent OBP. Most important, he has improved every year as he climbs up. That is the key to me. I think he is KW kind of player. I do not mind Ks as long as there are walks and other things to make up for it.
