I didn't see any place for new users to introduce themselves, so I'm doing it here. I have been lurking for a while and finally decided to join. Since I live in Kansas, I don't get to see many Sox games, so I find myself checking out the boards here a lot.

Anyway, I thought I'd share my memories of my first Sox game in person (so I can keep this post on topic of course! :) ):

It was 1984. I remember because there was still a lot of excitement in the city about the Sox after they won the division in '83. I must have been in 6th grade at the time. My family got tickets to a game because the Sox were running a promotion through my grade school. I think it was, if you get good grades then you can get a discount to selected games. We chose a night game against Detroit.

We sat in the left field bleachers, lower deck, somewhere towards the back corner. During the game, Greg Luzinski came up to the plate. He hit a really high fly ball to left and I quickly lost sight of it because the upper deck blocked my view. I thought it landed in the upper deck, but then I hear everyone at the park chanting something. At first I think it sounds like "Oooh! Oooh!", but then I managed to get a glimpse of the scoreboard in center field. It had a picture of a bulldog saying "ROOF ROOF". Then I got it....Luzinski hit it onto the roof of the upper deck bleachers! Wow! I started shouting "Roof!" along with everyone else.

Later in the game, a Detroit player also hit a high homer to left. I read later that his also landed on the roof. Didn't matter though -- the Sox still won in the end! :cheers We all had a great time.

That was my first live Sox game. Sometimes I wonder if my memory is playing tricks on me. Two roof shots in at one game?! That must have been really rare.
