Hawk's career statistics???

For the way he talks on the air, I would have thought he would have better numbers than these.

Hawk can be self-deprecating about his career. DJ on the other hand you would think hit between 300-400 homers with close to a .300 average, while playing gold glove caliber defense when he is discussing his playing days.

You’re Both Right!

Sure, most folks know Hawk was a career .239 hitter.

But that doesn’t seem to prevent him from having an outsize ego which allows no point of view in the broadcast booth other than his own, all the while maintaining that “aw shucks” personality.

Guess I’m a little down on the Hawkaroo right now. I’m remembering how I felt last year at this time while he was waxing rhapsodically about ALL THOSE HOME RUNS the boys were slugging as we waved good bye to lst place. This week, we’ve had to listen to him insult our intelligence by proclaiming repeatedly that IT’S NOT A COLLAPSE. Whatever.

A lot of best managers and general managers of all times were not great ball players. For example...

Billly Beane

Tony Larussa

I don't think either of those guys lack any ego, but still are great at what they do, despite how bad their playing careers were.

I agree with you, but my COMPLETE thought was: "But that doesn’t seem to prevent him from having an outsize ego which allows no point of view in the broadcast booth other than his own, all the while maintaining that “aw shucks” personality"

That aspect of his broadcast performance is what has been killing it for me this year. As my name should indicate, I used to be a big Ken Harrelson fan. I guess I’ve just fallen out of love with Hawk this year. Strange as it may seem to others who’ve followed his career in the broadcast booth, I honestly had never noticed how much he insists on total agreement from his color partner with darn near EVERYTHING he says. He actually bullies, and harps on something, and interrupts DJ until he gets him to parrot his response or shut up.

Was Hawk always this way? Was I always this blind? And, yes, I'm tired of "STRETCH!", too.

Actually, some of his stats are pretty damn good. How many on here would not mind a 35 hr 109 rbi guy in this lineup. Granted, that was one year. Most who ever played baseball never achieve what hawk did playing. He was also 3rd for MVP in 1968.

Yah and he was a dead pull hitter, rarely went the other way and struck out alot, so its kinda of funny to listen to him talk about going to right field and players not swinging for the fences.
