December 4, 200520 yr Looks like we will see a lot more of the Byrd Man. 2 years 14.25 million to the Tribe. Rosenthal also says the Tribe is the front runner for Trevor Hoffman. Edited December 5, 200520 yr by JDsDirtySox
December 4, 200520 yr QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Dec 4, 2005 -> 03:22 PM) f***. I'm pissed, even though 62.25 million is a lot per year. He was very good against us in the playoffs, so he might be worth it.
December 4, 200520 yr I'd rather the sox face Byrd than Millwood. Millwood was very tough vs. the sox last yr. Hoffman isn't the same pitcher he once was. And the sox didn't fare well vs. Wickman in the past. So IMO, Millwood + Wickman >>> Byrd + Hoffman
December 4, 200520 yr QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Dec 4, 2005 -> 03:22 PM) f***. I'm pissed, even though 62.25 million is a lot per year. Anyway they overpaid for him, but he should be successful for the two years and he kicks ass versus us.
December 4, 200520 yr QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 4, 2005 -> 03:27 PM) The market for pitchers is totally f***ed now. What was Shapiro thinking? Millwood now is $11-12 million dollar pitcher and Burnett is a $12-13 million pitcher. Shapiro needed a vet pitcher to keep up with the Sox, it was a desperation move.
December 4, 200520 yr If Byrd is replacing Elarton (and they re-sign Millwood or get someone near his quality), then I'm unhappy with this move. If Byrd is replacing Millwood, then I'm happy. Hoffman is still pretty good, but his ERA wasn't too great last year in the terrible NL West in a gigantic stadium. He'd almost definitely be a downgrade from Wickman's performance from last year.
December 4, 200520 yr Byrd is a real solid pitcher, nice pickup for Cleveland. He'll be a nice replacement for Elarton, they still need a find a replacement for Millwood though.
December 4, 200520 yr IF they get anotehr guy equal to Byrd then its sort of a wash because while Milwood is better than Byrd, Elarton is slightly less.
December 4, 200520 yr Byrd's in to replace Millwood. They can't afford to resign him. They might manage to bring back Elarton, but that's about the highest quality pitcher I can see them putting in #5. I'm still holding out hope they bring back Juan Gonzalez.
December 4, 200520 yr LOL. THat is a lot of money for a guy liek that. I woulda thrown in the extra money and just resigned Millwood. Millwood OWNED us last year too, so it really doesn't matter from our perspective.

We have some trouble with Byrd but much more against Millwood. LOL. THat is a lot of money for a guy liek that. I woulda thrown in the extra money and just resigned Millwood. I agree with you though. I'd rather pay Millwood the extra money. Edited December 4, 200520 yr by SSH2005

December 4, 200520 yr That means we will be seeing a lot more of that half troll/half man looking thing named Paul Byrd. I hope Thome and Anderson can hit him, because otherwise he may have a Joe Mays type hold on us for 2 years.
December 4, 200520 yr QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Dec 4, 2005 -> 09:27 PM) Anyway they overpaid for him, but he should be successful for the two years and he kicks ass versus us. bor-ass must be his agent
December 5, 200520 yr QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 4, 2005 -> 01:37 PM) He made us look silly in the playoffs. This doesnt make me happy..... Folks...don't forget, Byrd made us look bad...but since then, we've added one HELL of a left handed bat to our lineup.

December 5, 200520 yr this guys a journeyman and a junk thrower? this is a terrible signing for the Indians.
December 5, 200520 yr Hes a soft tossing flyball pitcher. Facing him in the playoffs is one thing, facing him a whole bunch of times in league play means we will get to him. I would rather face a Byrd over facing Millwood. Millwoods pedigree is a hell of a lot better than Paul Byrd. Thome vs Byrd should be a nice matchup in our favor. I am thinking the ball should land nicely in the bullpen sports bar.
December 5, 200520 yr QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Dec 4, 2005 -> 10:21 PM) Thome vs Byrd should be a nice matchup in our favor. I am thinking the ball should land nicely on the concourse fixed.
December 5, 200520 yr This signing doesn't worry me at all, since they are probably not going to add Millwood or Burnett. That means their rotation is going to take a hit, because Byrd is a passable #3 at best. His ERA has been in the high 3's the last 3 seasons, which is decent but not stellar. They still need another starter and another bullpen arm. I've been saying several bullpen arms, but then I looked at the numbers again and some of their guys are decent (like Cabrera, Miller, Rhodes, and Betancourt). they need a real closer pretty badly though.
December 5, 200520 yr As good as he handled us in the playoffs weren't we pretty close to rocking him the last inning in both games? I consider him an upgrade over Elarton since he does know how to succeed with his junk.
December 5, 200520 yr I'd imagine this move is replacing Millwood, and they'll either bring up an arm from the minors to replace Elarton, or they'll resign Elarton. Elarton seems underrated to me. For all the s*** the guy takes, he did put up an ERA of under 4 and WHIPs of 1.10 or lower in 3 of the last 4 months of the season(unless his October start against the Sox changes his Sept/Oct numbers, and it very well could have - it was a pretty bad start) I look for him to have a pretty solid year next year...10-14 wins, ERA in the 4.00-4.50 range with 200 innings...or in other words a pretty solid #4 pitcher.
