February 10, 200620 yr QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 10, 2006 -> 02:17 PM) Good addition to the team...could be the favorite to be the 2nd lefty out of the pen. In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king, huh?

February 10, 200620 yr Can anybody give some kind of scouting report on this guy? I've never heard of him.
February 10, 200620 yr How's this for irony -- the other lefty we signed awhile ago, Javier Lopez, was DFA'd by the Diamondbacks last season to bring up Armando Almanza. Here's Armando Almanza... Career Stats
February 10, 200620 yr I like this move, between Munoz, Lopez, and Almanza one of those guys should give us the innings we need from our second lefty. CWSOX45
February 10, 200620 yr QUOTE(CWSOX45 @ Feb 10, 2006 -> 05:00 PM) I like this move, between Munoz, Lopez, and Almanza one of those guys should give us the innings we need from our second lefty. CWSOX45 Any of those guys can't be any worse than Marte was last year.
February 10, 200620 yr QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Feb 10, 2006 -> 05:08 PM) Any of those guys can't be any worse than Marte was last year. They are. These are players who the f***ing diamondbacks don't want. Definition of suck.
February 10, 200620 yr They are. These are players who the f***ing diamondbacks don't want. Definition of suck. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> But didn't the Diamondbacks have a stellar bullpen last season?
February 11, 200620 yr QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Feb 10, 2006 -> 05:17 PM) I would STRONGY disagree. Marte was my least favorite White Sox, I mean, Timo>>>>Marte for me at least, but IMO, Munoz, Lopez and Almanza can be MUCH worse. Yes but no at the same time. What I mean by that is ya I'm sure they can be worse but unless they prove themselves they aren't going to be thrown into pressure situations like Damaso was.
February 11, 200620 yr Yes but no at the same time. What I mean by that is ya I'm sure they can be worse but unless they prove themselves they aren't going to be thrown into pressure situations like Damaso was. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> As long as one of these poor schlubs can at least get lefties out, we should be okay. Ozzie can use the guy who wins the job as a true LOOGY and play to his strengths. Let McCarthy, Hermanson, Politte, Cotts, and Jenks face everyone else.
February 11, 200620 yr QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Feb 10, 2006 -> 07:50 PM) How fast does he throw? 2003 Season Confidence and health again were problems for Armando Almanza, whose raw stuff alone would rank him among the game's top lefthanded relievers. Almanza struggled to command his curveball, lost a couple of games on late home runs and had been relegated to mopup duty when elbow pain ended his season in late August. He underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove bone spurs and did not make the playoff roster. Pitching, Defense & HittingWhen he's on, Almanza can overpower hitters with a live fastball between 92-96 MPH. He always has been a flyball pitcher, and that can get him in trouble when his stuff tails off. His slow curve upsets hitters when he can throw it for strikes. When he can't, they lay off it or pound it for hits. Almanza has a thick frame but is a decent fielder who holds runners well. He rarely bats. 2004 Outlook Eligible for arbitration, Almanza could become an expensive luxury for a team with severe payroll problems. If he's not non-tendered, he could be moved in a deal for middling prospects. He should be healthy by spring training, when he'll need to reestablish himself as a top situational lefty. From ESPN.com's profile.
February 11, 200620 yr QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 11, 2006 -> 12:58 AM) That's not a bad scouting report for someone signed off the scrap heap. Definitely worth a shot.
February 11, 200620 yr QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 11, 2006 -> 12:58 AM) That's not a bad scouting report for someone signed off the scrap heap. Agreed. Maybe Coop can work some more magic.
February 11, 200620 yr That is an impressive get off the heap on the surface...makes you wonder why a) nobody else has jumped on him....and B) Why the hell the DBacks wouldn't have kept him with that horses*** staff they have?!?
February 11, 200620 yr It's interesting that he gave the Marlins 50 innings in 2003 when they won the WS, with Ozzie. So Ozzie should be familiar with him
February 11, 200620 yr Beck, I think you hit the nail on the head. Ozzie has seen this guy over a period of time and knows what he can do. At the least, Oz is doing him a favor and giving him a showcase opportunity. At best, he fills a need. Low risk some reward potential.

At the least, Oz is doing him a favor and giving him a showcase opportunity. At best, he fills a need. Low risk some reward potential. At the least, he sounds like a guy who is at the level of the other guys. Maybe others have a higher "ceiling". But this guy sounds like the "floor" that the others need to beat--being tough vs. lefty hitters.

CWSOX45 I would substitute the word "could" for "should" in your statement. None of these guys has shown much at the major league level, but maybe they get lucky with one of them. Its worth a shot. Its not like they have to throw them in a real game to see if they can get the job done.
February 13, 200620 yr Almanza had had good K numbers more than 1 per inning, But he is equally wild and you can't have that from a lefty specialist. Javier Lopez ain't good either, Only thing is that he's a submariner. http://www.baseball-reference.com/a/almanar01.shtml Those are Almanza's Numbers

Armando Almanza's Transactions December 14, 1998: Traded by the St. Louis Cardinals with Braden Looper and Pablo Ozuna to the Florida Marlins for Edgar Renteria.
February 14, 200620 yr Author QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 09:28 AM) Haha... Didn't Cheat just recently say something along the lines of how Ozuna was like the 8th best prospect in the game at one point? At the time, it was really not a bad trade at all for Florida, considering how much they were firesaling. Edited February 14, 200620 yr by witesoxfan
