April 24, 200619 yr I think he's pretty good. He seems to be right alot. I know Ryan Leaf isn't a big fan.
April 24, 200619 yr Excuse me....he worked long and hard for his title. It should read....Mel Kiper Jr., Draft Expert.
April 24, 200619 yr QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 04:33 PM) I respect his knowledge and think he knows his s*** but he comes off as a tool ^^^ I hate the guy, but I'm not going to deny that he's good at his craft.
April 24, 200619 yr Count Chocula's love child knows his stuff when it comes to college players translating to NFL players. He doesnt get his due IMO because of his arrogance.
April 24, 200619 yr It's so fashionable to bash on this guy and his Eddie Muster looks, but, the truth of the matter is, this guy knows his stuff, is in the know, and rarely misses. I've been following the draft for years now and I have to say Kiper is quite good at what he does. Yes, every now and then he can be accused of having an ESPN East-coast-bias type vibe on certain players and certain programs, but, I like the guy, yeah.
April 24, 200619 yr QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 04:31 PM) It's so fashionable to bash on this guy and his Eddie Muster looks, but, the truth of the matter is, this guy knows his stuff, is in the know, and rarely misses. Kiper misses just as often as anyone else. He knows his stuff, but I think just about anyone could know that much stuff if that was their job.
April 24, 200619 yr Kiper has more access to information than most people. Other than that he is about as good or bad as anyone else who follows football on a consistent basis.
April 24, 200619 yr QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 03:38 PM) Kiper misses just as often as anyone else. He knows his stuff, but I think just about anyone could know that much stuff if that was their job. Correct. I think that's where I was heading, but, my wording was misfortunate. I'm sick and tired of people saying anyone could know/do the jobs of people like Bruce Levine and Mel Kiper if they had the same resources. Well, you know what, you don't. They do. They get paid for it. They are in the know. You are not. /endrant
April 24, 200619 yr After working with some football teams and agents, I can confidently say that they trust his evaluations of players more than anyone else in the field....and it's not even close. Kiper Jr.'s big book every year is the Bible to football executives.
April 24, 200619 yr QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 03:44 PM) After working with some football teams and agents, I can confidently say that they trust his evaluations of players more than anyone else in the field....and it's not even close. Kiper Jr.'s big book every year is the Bible to football executives. The only contact I have in the Chicago Bears organization--front office--has told me the same thing on not one, but two separate occasions. He has a sterling repuation amongst NFL officials and his opinion is highly regarded.
April 24, 200619 yr I think he's pretty good... but he tends to play his favorites... He hates Jay Cutler... Edited April 24, 200619 yr by AbeFroman
April 24, 200619 yr QUOTE(AbeFroman @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 03:59 PM) I think he's pretty good... but he tends to play his favorites... He hates Jay Cutler... In that, he is correct. Case in point. The guy knows his stuff. Cutler is J.P. Lossman/Kyle Boller part deux.
April 24, 200619 yr QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 05:02 PM) Cutler is J.P. Lossman part deux. That's exactly 100% the comparison I am making
April 25, 200619 yr Kiper does not use much of his own opinion just puts out how he thinks the draft will go, I would have much more respect for him if he did not go the safe route but instead said who are the best players in order.
April 25, 200619 yr he does do his own bog board which is shown on draft day that kinda does what you want
April 25, 200619 yr i've actually started to like mel a lot more listening to his work on espnradio every saturday. i think he has a pretty decent sense of humor and presents valid arguments for his opinions. in terms of his talent evaluating, it's hit or miss. but really, what evaluator isn't? general managers blow it every year and they're supposed to be the real experts. this is such an inexact science, that those "in the know" are bound to be wrong a lot. the only thing i don't like about mel is the fact he eats pumpkin pie for breakfast every morning. that's just downright weird.
April 25, 200619 yr QUOTE(soxhawks @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 07:33 PM) Kiper does not use much of his own opinion just puts out how he thinks the draft will go, I would have much more respect for him if he did not go the safe route but instead said who are the best players in order. Thats not what I find with kiper. I think he analyzes team needs and cross-references it to the best players in the draft. Sometimes it looks like the safe route, but if he is right, he is right.
April 25, 200619 yr QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 05:30 PM) That's exactly 100% the comparison I am making Well let's hope Cutler is an MVP caliber QB after 3-4 years in the league
April 25, 200619 yr did mel kiper coin, or just popularize, the word "tweener"? regardless, i love him for it.
April 25, 200619 yr QUOTE(False Alarm @ Apr 25, 2006 -> 07:48 PM) did mel kiper coin, or just popularize, the word "tweener"? regardless, i love him for it. no, i think that was alexis arquette...
April 25, 200619 yr QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 04:02 PM) In that, he is correct. Case in point. The guy knows his stuff. Cutler is J.P. Lossman/Kyle Boller part deux. Mel Kiper Jr. loved Kyle Boller though... he got that one wrong. I think he was just lukewarm on Losman... who genuinely sucks.
