Well, here's hoping we see more of what we saw tonight. Because he's not getting traded this season (and wouldn't even if he didn't have the no trade) and he's going to be getting the ball every fifth day.

I didn't see the game, but considering he didn't walk anybody and struck

out five and gave up just six hits, it sounds like he did well.

If he can build

on this, he still can win a lot of games and his experience will be important

come September and playoff time. Because of what he did in the postseason

I am more apt to give him a break a few more weeks.

3-2 is a team stat, his ERA is still over 6, that's what I'm looking at.

By this statement, you wouldn't have been satisfied unless Garland had gone 8 only surendering 1. And even then his ERA is still above 5!!

 

He had a bad start to the season. Therefore your "he's got an inflated ERA" argument will work as long as he throws normally. he has to throw a number of shutouts in a row before you finally put that on the shelf.

 

 

Garland has shown the ability over his career to have influence over the balls in play. That is, most pitchers allow a fairly uniform .300 average on balls in play. They have no control over it. It often fluctuates year to year, but career marks will hover around .300.

 

Entering this season, Garland had a career mark of .275. He has some influence on balls in play. His sinker/changeup combo yields a greater number of weak groundouts than the average pitcher. He got away from throwin those two pitches early this season.

 

He entered tonight's game with a BABIP of .331. It's not going to stay that high. Garland's career high was about .284. As long as he continues to throw the sinker/change, like tonight, he will continue toward his career norm of .275 BABIP and his ERA will come down. That combined with his improved walk rate, will result in him being an above average pitcher, when all is said an done.

His poor pitching luckily did not carry over to the postseason but he was incredibly hittable in April of this season. My problem with Garland has nothing to do with stats, it has to do with him making bad pitches and getting hit like he never was in the past. In all likelyhood he will settle down and begin to pitch better but that doesn't mean that his poor pitching to start this season should be ignored.

Garland said he pitched better because he hurt his knuckle and he had to throw his sinker slower so it worked more.

 

I remember something similar last year? He did something to his hand or arm and that helped his sinker. Anyone remember what it was?

Exactly. Garland had a f***ing 7.something ERA. He deserved all the s*** that was thrown at him, especially since he's making a good deal of money now.

 

He pitched well tonight, nobody's debating that.
