Big Hurt Countdown to 500 Thread

Thomas tore his tricep, and the way he fell, it really doesn't surprise me that it tore at all. I mean, I'm sure there's physics and medical science and all that gibberish that I don't understand and never will, but when 275 pounds goes from running to falling/diving at full extension, hitting the ground hard, and landing from 6'5 in the air, I'd imagine that type of force could very easily tear a relatively small muscle on the back of the arm.

or at least a quasi-competent allegation from a teammate (McGwire).

Also: an arrested trainer + FBI documents. Operation Equine.

I was at that game and it really wasn't a violent injury at all. Really no action that you don't really see every day. He probably came down on it the precise way you would have to for that kind of damage to occur, and he probably couldn't have done it if he tried to do it 10,000 times. He was definitely hurt, but at first I don't think even he thought it was all that serious. The White Sox didn't even know how injured he was until several days later. Remember David Wells sort of questioning him about not playing hurt? Frank still with the 1 homer and 4 rbi on the grand slam for the season. No other extra base hits. He's literally limping to 500.

yep, just like how everyone( well at least 80% of the board) said he was limping all year last year.

Just like 2006, I think Frank will be just fine.

Frank hit another one out today.

Despite his .204 average his .328 on base is at least respectable and he is 4th on the team in runs. He is slumping and still being an average producer.

Thomas hits 490th home run to carry Blue Jays

Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 3

BOSTON (AP) -- Frank Thomas hit his 490th homer, a go-ahead, two-run drive off Tim Wakefield in the sixth inning that led the Toronto Blue Jays over the Boston Red Sox 7-3 on Monday night.

Aaron Hill had four hits, including a two-run homer in the ninth, as Toronto ended a five-game losing streak and stopped Boston's five-game winning streak. Hill has four homers in 19 games after getting six in 155 last year.

Tomo Ohka (1-2) allowed three runs -- two earned -- and six hits in five-plus innings to win in a rematch of Boston's 4-1 victory at Toronto last Wednesday. It was his first win in eight starts since Aug. 24 at Colorado.

Jason Frasor, filling in for injured closer B.J. Ryan, got his second save in two chances.

Wakefield gave up four runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in six innings. His ERA rose from an AL-best 1.35 to 2.08.

A day after tying a major league record with four straight homers against the New York Yankees, Boston didn't hit any.

Boston's Mike Lowell went 2-for-3 to improve his batting average to .323 but the third baseman continued his struggles in the field. His error in the second was his sixth in 36 chances. He has just six errors all last season when he had 462 chances and was second in AL fielding percentage to Oakland's Eric Chavez.

Dustin Pedroia, 1-for-28 before getting two hits Sunday, put Boston ahead 2-1 with a two-run double in the fourth. Wakefield allowed just four runs in 25 innings entering the sixth, when he gave up Thomas' third homer of the season -- his second against the Red Sox -- and Jason Phillips' RBI single.

Boston cut the lead to 4-3 when Lowell scored on shortstop Royce Clayton's throwing error in the sixth. Adam Lind hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Game notes

Ryan (elbow) was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day DL. ... Boston CF Wily Mo Pena struck out in five straight at-bats before hitting into a forceout in the fourth. ... John McDonald had three hits for Toronto. ... Boston's Julio Lugo went 0-for-5 and is in a 2-for-23 slump.

A CLOSER LOOK

• Summary: Frank Thomas put the Blue Jays ahead to stay with a two-run homer in the sixth against the Red Sox.

• Hero: Thomas' 490th career homer was the difference.

• Unsung hero: The Blue Jays got four hits, including a two-run homer, from Aaron Hill.

• Figure this: One day after hitting four consecutive homers, the Red Sox didn't go deep on Monday. • Elias Says: (if applicable to the game) A teaser sentence can be written here to get the reader to click on hyper-linked Elias at start of this entry. -->

Geez-us...it wasn't a cheapie either.

He'll have 2300+ hits, 500+ HR, 1600+ RBI, 1600+ BB, and maybe 1500+ R by then end of the year if he stays healthy. I don't care if that's been posted before, it needs to be mentioned.

I'm just sad that Frank won't get 3000 hits. The guy was one of the best pure average hitters for a long time in his career and it sucks he'll never reach what I consider the elite plateua for an offensive player (3000 hits).

One thing that frustrated me with Frank the past 5 years is that he became much more interested in the homer and his average suffered immensely because of it.

After a homer he doesn't have to run as hard . . .

I've always thought that was a logical conclusion to not being the day to day first baseman. Eliminate the need for all around baseball muscles and with his ability to add muscle, why not bulk up and power 'em out? I think if he was asked to play first more, he would have stayed "slimmer" (at least by Frank standards) and remained more of an all around hitter.

IIRC it's been longer than that, He hasn't hit for average since he was hurt in 2001.

I think he put a dent in the sign.

He walked way too much for 300 hits.

why? that'd be friggin awesome cuz then he'd get an ovation from us (at least i'd do it) and i'd be pretty cool. i mean, as long as we win the game

yeah i would love for him to hit it here, we could even retire the seat it landed on.

And retire his number at the same time.

BTW, I wonder at the end of his career if he will sign a one day contract to retire as a Sox player?

:D Emmit was plenty pissed at the Cowboys when they cut him loose. Things change, I hope it does for Frank after he hits 600.

No chance in hell those legs get him to 600...

He may dislike some specific people within the organization, very important ones at that...but take a moment and remember the ovations he received last year with the A's in his first game back.

fans and front office are two different entities.
