Southsider...I agree with you. What would the city's skyline be if people b****ed about Mies Van Der Rohe, Louis Sullivan, Skidmore, etc. Things like the Spire, Aqua, etc. make Chicago what it is. Except for that one building on Wacker just north of Randolph...that thing is a monstrosity!!!

I heard that the architects had originall yneglected to put heating elements in the slanted roof and it was only after the first big snow in 1984 when there was a couple of inches accumulated on the roof that it dawned on them that they had the makings of a landslide on their hands and then went back and put in heating elements.

 

Can anybody confirm this or is this the most urban of urban legends?

Nope...that's Michigan and Randolph. Go West on Randolph. I can't even explain it. I've hated it ever since I saw it. Kinda looks like an crappy Connect Four board.

Yeah, that was supposed to take you to the Franklin and Lake which is right where Lake and N Wacker intersect, if you look that's where the green arrow is. I'm not really sure why it went a few blocks east like that.

The whole "on Wacker, just north of Randolph" thing kind of threw me off since it's south of Randolph. So you're talking about 123 N. Wacker then.

Damn! I knew about the Spire; I didn't know about all these other skyscrapers in construction. Looks like the ones mentioned, outside of the Spire, should be done around the time the International Olympic Committee determines if we get the games or not. That should only help our cause. Man, the Chitown skyline is going to be beyond amazing by the time they finish the Spire.

Also 111 S Wacker is pretty recent as is the building right next to it the hyatt center

I work right next door to the 111 Wacker building... Its nice and airy looking.

I live in a town of 15,000 people - Asbury Park. We currently have one building in our skyline. The Asbury Tower built in the early 1970s and consists of Senior Housing. It's 27 stories tall and was the tallest building on the New Jersey Shore until casinos were built in Atlantic City. It is the tallest building between AC and NYC.

 

It will soon be joined by a number of other taller buildings. All condo buildings and all blight. The only vaguely interesting building is the Esperanza.

There's this one building on the north side, I think it's at about Addison and Clark -- really ugly -- smells, too!

They make it look much better in the picture. But when you drive by it...eeeeeeeee-yuck!

Wanted to bump this. The Trump Tower is finally getting places. The Spire's foundation and what not is still under construction. And I today realized that the Aqua building will be right near the Aon Center. With them being very similar heights, I think they are going to complement each other well. Coming from the south on Lake Shore Drive is going to be something else.

 

BTW, my fascination with this mainly comes from seeing progress every couple months. Being away at school, and not going downtown much anyway while in Chicago, it's cool to come back and see those buildings getting taller and taller.

 

SKYSCRAPERS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION:

 

Aqua: 225 N Columbus (next to Aon Center)

 

Waterview Tower: 121 W Wacker (Across the river from the Merchandise Mart, not far from Trump)

 

Trump Tower: 401 North Wabash Avenue (Old Sun-Times Building location)

 

300 North Lasalle: 321 N LaSalle (Across from future Waterview)

 

Legacy Tower at Millennium Park: Monroe and Wabash

 

Then we also have the Chicago Spire obviously (built out near the Navy Pier entrance) and One Musuem Park, which likes out of place right now.

It's good to see we're finally past the "OMG, tall buildings are targets" phase once and for all.

 

I like the Aqua building. It has to be a good 1,000+ feet if it's comparable to the Aon Center, which -- at a time long since passed -- was the 10th tallest building in the world.

According to Wikipedia, Aon Center (83 floors) stands at 1136 ft tall and is 16th largest in the world currently and Aqua will be somewhere around 822 feet tall with 87 floors.

Another interesting project to watch is Blue Cross/Blue Shield getting 30ish more floors on top of its exsisting structure. Because of its locations right on the northern end of Millenium Park it is an easy one to watch the progress of.
