Considering Bobby's 40 saves and his sensational record-setting streak of consecutive outs recorded, I was wondering ... should Bobby receive votes for AL Cy Young winner?

I think he should.

He was outstanding all year long.

i voted yes, IMO if other closers can get consideration in recent years, then Jenks performance this year deserves recognition

3-5, 2.77 ERA, WHIP 0.89, 40/46 SV, BAA .196 Tied an MLB record that stood for over 30 years, pretty much underrated all year long, and thats only because this team performed like complete garbage, if we were in a pennant race or had won the division, Jenks would probably be getting a LOT of press this year and would definitely be one of the major stories this post season

No. Jenks has had a fantastic season, but he wasn't even in a top 3 closer in the AL. Putz, Nathan and Papelbon all had better seasons.

 

i'll give you putz and papelbon, but not nathan, he leads jenks in ERA and had 2 less BSV, but jenks had 4 more saves than he did, a lower WHIP, a lower BAA, and of course the 41 consecutive outs

What does Beckett have to do with Bobby getting Cy Young consideration? Of course, most people would take a starter like Beckett over a Closer like Jenks.

As much as I would like to see Bobby win the Cy Young, I just don't see a closer winning it.

Hell no, and it's crazy this is being asked. He's a closer on one of the 5 worst teams in baseball. Now I know it's not his fault we suck, but closers should almost never get Cy Young consideration as it is, let alone a closer on an awful team. And this is ignoring the fact that J.J. Putz, Jonathan Papelbon, and Joe Nathan all have better numbers than Jenks this year, and that's just among AL closers.

I find it amazing that a team with one of the worst records in baseball has a closer with 40 saves. Doesn't seem logical.

I put yes because of percentage of team wins he preserved and the ceremony before last nights game was very special

I voted YES. Jenks had a great year and it shouldn't matter that he did this with a team that sucked. He deserves some votes just to recognize what he did. With 40 Saves on this team, just imagine what he might have done with a good team.

 

How many people are voters allowed to vote for? Is it just 1, top 3, or what?

 

I could fully believe that he's performed well enough to be top 10 on some people's ballots. But the only way I consider a Closer to be on top is if there's a closer who has absolutely phenomenal numbers and no obvious starting pitcher that stands out. I mean, like in the late 80's, Eckersley or something like that (never gets to 3-2 on a lefty until Gibson in game 1 of the World Series in 88 for example).

 

Right now, we have 3-4 guys on winning teams who have won nearly 20 games, with things like the league lead in strikeouts and so forth. No matter how much I like Bobby's performance, I think you have to look at the 200 innigns guys before the 60 innings guys.

I don't think it's crazy to ask the question.

a.) There's never much new discussion on here except the perceived value of a No. 1

draft pick versus winning at all costs.

b.) I think the fact he has 40 saves and that incredible consecutive out streak and doing

it on a horrible team is even more impressive than if it would have been a good team.

I don't think he should win it, but my point and hope was that he would be

in the discussion.

At any rate ... great year, Bobby.

I think a reliever would have to save 50 games or have an era under 2 before they are considered for a cy young.

I thought everyone loved the 1990 Sox, who went 94-68.

With so many saves, which also means so many close games, we were really close to an even s hittier season. In fact it could have been craptastic if we didn't have a closer.

I saw Jenks today - apparently he's still in the Chicago area for the offseason.

 

He's either lost weight or looks to be in fantasic shape. Whether or not he can keep the fat of until March is another story, but it appears he's off to a good start. Maybe he saw the stat that his fastball lost an average of 2 mph from 06 to 07...

No, thats just like saying just because Anibal threw a no hitter last year he should get votes for the Cy Young.

I am obviously one of the biggest Bobby Jenks fans on the site. He has a great season for a closer, but closers shouldnt get the Cy Young They have their own award already.
