A little more detail, from the Trib:

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York will concede tonight that Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois has the delegates needed to secure the Democratic Party's 2008 presidential nomination, campaign officials are telling the Associated Press.

"The former first lady will stop short of formally suspending or ending her race in her speech in New York City'' tonight, the AP's Beth Fouhy reports. "She will pledge to continue to speak out on issues like health care. But for all intents and purposes, two senior officials said, the campaign is over.''

Most campaign staff will be let go and will be paid through June 15, according to the officials who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Terry McAuliffe, the campaign chairman, said publicly on NBC's Today show today that once Obama has the number of delegates needed for the nomination Clinton will indeed congratulate him and "call him the nominee.''

Interesting that I don't see anything there about an endorsement. She really is more interested in her own political career than anything else.

Only about a month and a half too late.

At least when Huckabee did it, he wasn't really doing any intentional damage.

That'd be more in line with what that moron has been doing thus far.

But I saw on drudge that Obama is getting a ton of supers today, so it might be a moot point

If you read the details, it is true, but also not true. She will concede that he has the delegates and has clinched the win - because he will, so she has to. Heck, McAuliffe even acknowledged it. But, also, she will continue to campaign, for reasons that (IMO) can only be construed as her furthering her 2012 campaign chances.

yeah, I had an extra minute and read it and the link I put on above is basically saying the same thing. Well, that's just sad.

CNN update on McAuliffe's denial. You have to read beyond the bluster, and see some key words there - that Obama doesn't have the numbers, YET. So of course he is saying this. When he does have the numbers, tonight or tomorrow, you'll see Clinton do some sort of concession. Unfortunately, it will probably be half-ass and petty, like everything else in her campaign has been. She won't endorse.

yeah of course not. I imagine she hopes McCain beats Obama and then she can trash him for the next 4 years so she looks good in 2012

Any idea on what Obama would do if he loses to McCain? Would he stay in the Senate or would he try for gov of Il? I imagine Blago doesn't have another run in him

According to Obama himself, the run for President was a one-time bargain with his wife. Supposedly. After that, he said, not again.

Of course, we've heard that sort of line before, and they sometimes come back anyway. Or, like with Colin Powell, maybe Obama really means it. Hard to say.

He also said for a long LONG time that he wasn't going to run at all...

Hilary... JUST... GO.... AWAY!

Hillary will acknowledge that Barack has the delegates. I don't know if she will drop out and I really doubt she'll endorse him.

She can still keep it up, trying to ply away pledged delegates, superdelegates, whining about this and that, etc. so that she keeps beating up Barack and gives herself a better opening for a 2012 run.

She HAS to endorse him once he wins. It would be political suicide not to do so.

Not necessarily.

It's entirely possible she could be thinking "if Obama fails to take out McCain, we have another 4 years of disastrous Republican wars and mismanagement of the country, and there'll be a gigantic backlash within the party against the factions that helped Obama win the nomination and lose the general." In other words, she can play for 2012 and say "haha you made a mistake listening to the kids now vote for me!"

And turn into Joe Liberman? Not gonna happen. After screwing her party for so long, she has to fall in line or she has no support from the Dems in '12. She knows that. She has already turned into a pariah in her party, if she didn't have the decency to support her parties nominee, she is done.

Oh, she'll endorse him after the convention for sure. I don't see her doing it before then, though.

:D

For the first time in a while, I'll actually be watching the political coverage on TV this evening. I think the two speeches that will be made should be very interesting.
