The Vulture does it again

Featured Replies

The Vulture, Adam Russell, has been a great addition to this bullpen. And it feels good to have a 'pen that is solid and deep for the first time since '05. Not a shaky person in there.

That's a great nickname.

Tall, big wingspan, and opportunistic.

Plus the fact he steals wins away from the starter. Like a Vulture eats the dead animal killed by a lion, Russell gets the win by stepping in on a situation by the starting 5.

Hawk is credited for the nickname, heard it the night Alexei shocked the Indians

We've been over this before on Soxtalk. His nickname is Tree. This is from Russell, himself. There's no debating it.

TREE

since when are you allowed to make up your own nickname? I like the vulture.

I dunno dude the Tree is pretty intimidating. Imagine him being coming out of the bullpen.....

"Wasting no time they go to the Tree, the Tree leads the league in ERA, K/9, and Hit batsmen. I heard he threw at his own kid in a father son game..."

Isn't Hawk the one who nicknamed Barry Jones the Vulture? Or did Jones have that nickname before coming to the Sox?

You don't have any real control over the nicknames you get tagged with. Otherwise good old Skidmarks Scanlon back from grade school would have opted for something a bit more flattering I'm sure.

Yeah, it would something better like Super Skidmarks Scanlon

There was a small contingent of kids who were pushing for the more subtle "Rusty", but Skidmarks won it in a walk.

The original "Vulture" was a pitcher named Phil Regan. He pitched in relief in the 70's (and 60's I think). Back when the relief pitchers pitched more than one inning and rarely got the win. He had years when he seemed to get these types of wins and was given the nickname due to swooping in and getting the opportunistic win.

Hawk did call Barry Jones this as well.

Cliff Politte was also called the Vulture during 05, IIRC. Probably just about every reliever has had this nickname if they have a similar run.

I think Phil Reagan was the original Vulture. Its really not a unique name. Its what every reliever who picks up relatively cheap wins is called.

How about "T-Bone"?

All I know is Russell made Jose Guillen look silly.
