He's certainly up there. With Andy Gonzalez already on the Major League team vying for the title of "Worst Position Player Ever," and with Ryan Garko and Francisco Gutierrez in the everyday lineup, bringing in Day to pitch - and preferably start - would give them something like an inverted All-Star team.

 

I still remember the Cleveland Assholes playing that song "The Night Chicago Died" or whatever it was during 2006. Thankfully, I also remember the Charlotte Knights sweeping them right out of the playoffs in 2005, the Indians missing the playoffs in '06, the Indians' best pitchers throwing up all over the mound like Boone Logan during last year's ALCS, and of course this magical 2008 season. I hate Cleveland, but I can hate them with a smile.

 

I hope KW does send some of our most putrid garbage over to Cleveland for Byrd. A move like that helps us both now and in the future.

I don't expect the Sox to eat all of the contract, which means we will see one to two solid prospects moved. That could include one or two of the AAA/AAAA pitchers the Sox currently have (ie, Whisler/Haeger/Broadway/Egbert). I'd think the Sox wouldn't go with Broadway and instead give the others up simply because Broadway is a former first rounder.

 

I don't anticipate Shelby/Poreda or any of the Sox higher upside prospects going (and its sad that I had to reach to go with Shelby as one of the "higher upside" prospects). The bright side is it looks as if the Sox are getting some decent talent in the lower levels.

 

The Yanks offered basically nothing with the willingness of taking on the entire contract and had no luck getting him so that leads me to believe the M's are going to ask for at least something in return.

 

Oh and Washburn was absolutely dominant in June and July. And I mean dominant (at least ERA wise). His August stats are skewed by one bad start (the other was what I'd consider average).

Well...a lot of question marks. What are his stats on the road versus in very "pitcher friendly" Safeco?

 

I haven't checked them yet.

 

It would seem that they would want a B level pitcher to go along with Fields/Poreda/Martinez/Silverio...something like that.

 

Then the issue is whether they would even want Fields back in a deal...depending on their plans for Beltre. You have to think the GM would be smart enough to build around defense in that stadium, and that would seem to take Josh out of the equation.

 

Finally, we basically pilfered Thornton from them (I know it's a new GM), and the Freddy Garcia deal also turned out to be quite a disaster (yes, I know Reed is back with the M's)...so they might be a little wary of taking on supposed "prospects" from the White Sox a 3rd time around.

OMG, I would hang up the phone instantly if they were looking for FIelds/Poreda/Martinez/Silverio. There ain't a f***ing change in hell I'm giving up that for a #5 starter who isn't exactly cheap. I could see giving up Fields in a package that netted back Beltre as well (and they'd want more than just Fields) but I doubt Beltre floats threw waivers. Plus that would be a significant amount of payroll the Sox would be bringing in.

 

I actually have a hunch that Kenny leaked this name in order to help him fly under the radar and get the guy he prefers. That said, I'd call for the firing of Williams if he gives up a top prospect for Washburn. The only way I wouldn't is if the Sox dealt a top prospect and than used 10+ million they got in cash and spent it entirely on international free agents and paying draft picks above slot money next year.

I'm thinking the opposite. The Sox don't have much left in their farm system to move, but they do have money. And if Jose's contract is insured, the Sox will likely end up recouping at least half of it.

This might be a problem for the Sox. I don't see Broadway or Fields being dealt, either. The M's will have to settle for lower-level players.

I don't understand all of the Washburn hatred here, either. His average ERA+ over the past three years is 94, which isn't exactly bad for a 5th starter. And with Sabathia not being an option and pretty much nobody ML-ready in our farm system either, we're going to need somebody to replace Jose next season. People here make a big deal about the $11 million or so left on his contract, but I think it's a pretty low-risk investment. It's a lot less than the $50 million or so that it'd take to sign a Jon Garland or a Gil Meche. And if the Sox get insurance money from Jose's injury, it's almost a moot point.

Paul Byrd - Despite the scarcity of available starting pitching, no team was willing to take on the remainder of Byrd's $7.5MM salary.

Greg Maddux - Maddux is earning $10MM this year and will only accept a trade to a West Coast team. The Dodgers wanted him but asked the Padres to pay more than 80% of his remaining salary according to Peter Gammons.

Duaner Sanchez - His velocity is down 3.6 mph from '06. Sanchez is under team control through '09.

Scott Schoeneweis - His strikeout rate is down, but so is his ERA. Apparently no team wanted to risk taking on his contract - $3.6MM this year, $3.6MM in '09.

Jarrod Washburn - Mariners sources told beat writer Geoff Baker that Washburn cleared. The Mariners may have overplayed their hand here. Washburn is set to earn $10.35MM next year.

Sanchez has been a really good NL set-up guy but the loss in velocity is a mystery...no interest in Schoeneweis after the Ramirez deal and due to the money invested in Thornton, Dotel, Linebrink, MacDougal and Jenks' expected salary bump in arbitration.

Underline means this guy COULD be a possibility for a KW deal in the next 2 weeks (2010 Free Agent Pitchers)

I would hope so. Byrd would be a great addition for us down the stretch... Seems logical. Indians can get a couple of prospects. The Sox fill that 5th spot hole. And we dont have to worry about paying him next year as he's a FA. BTW im sure most Sox fans know he's the guy that kept us from winning 11 straight in the post season in 2005

If the Yankees are going to snag Washburn, I'd be perfectly happy with Byrd. I don't think that trading within the division is a big deal for the Jndians in this case, as they're out of it and Byrd is a FA after this season.

 

At the very least, I like Byrd better in the #5 spot more than Carrasco, Broadway, Poreda, or our other minor-league players who have no long-term record of success in the majors.

 

D'Backs just got Adam Dunn for hardly nothing. I don't see why it would take a lot to get Washburn or Byrd.
