November 14, 200817 yr I'm about 100% sure when a player is "outrighted" he went through the waiver process and nobody claimed him. Edited November 14, 200817 yr by santo=dorf
November 14, 200817 yr This is a smart move to open up a 40-man roster spot, but if anyone thinks someone will take him with the money he is guaranteed they're absolutely crazy. Likewise, if you're expecting MacDougal to opt for free agency and take a 500% pay cut, well, that's equally insane.
November 14, 200817 yr QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:28 PM) I'm about 100% sure when a player is "outrighted" he went through the waiver process and nobody claimed him. Yep. Otherwise they'd just be reporting that he was placed on waivers. "Outrighting" a player is something you can only do after they clear waivers.
November 14, 200817 yr QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:26 PM) Can't MacDougal reject the guaranteed money to become a FA? He could but he's not going to do any better on the open market than the $3M he's guaranteed from the Sox, he'd be looking at a MLC with an invite to Spring Training if he were a free agent.
November 14, 200817 yr I hope you're right. Hopefully we're clearing space to bring in something worthwhile.
November 14, 200817 yr QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:39 PM) Seems like we are trying to clear money for something. Well this move doesn't free up any money unless MacDougal refuses the assignment, which he shouldn't. It looks like they're trying to free up spots on the 40 man roster, possibly for the Dec. 8th Rule V Draft deadline.
November 14, 200817 yr Exactly. MacDougal is garbage. Our only hope is for MacDougal to ask for a fresh start and get his release or get Ed Wade drunk.
November 14, 200817 yr Author Basically all this move does is opens up a spot to protect someone else in the rule 5 or take another player in the rule 5.
November 14, 200817 yr QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:47 PM) get Ed Wade drunk. Somebody buy that man a Sam Jackson.

November 14, 200817 yr So Macs options are to take the $3M from the Sox and sit out a year or to sign a new contract with somebody else?
November 14, 200817 yr QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 05:07 PM) So Macs options are to take the $3M from the Sox and sit out a year or to sign a new contract with somebody else? Well he's not "sitting out" he'll just start the year in Charlotte making $2.65M (there's a 350k buyout for '09 bringing the guaranteed money to $3M). If he pitches well enough through the first few months of the season the Sox could elect to place him on the 40 man roster and call him up. No matter what he decides to do however, he's likely to start the season in AAA, no one's going to give him a major league contract.
