December 10, 200817 yr As long as they dont hit the trifecta like they wanted, and get Burnett and Lowe as well, Im not as worried
December 10, 200817 yr Author Sabathia has established a reputation as a s***ty playoff pitcher lately. Pull a 10 ERA in the playoffs NY and they will have his head.
December 10, 200817 yr I was hoping he would have signed with the Dodgers, to get him out of the AL. nice pickup for the Yankees.
December 10, 200817 yr Thankfully money comes into this stuff. Imagine if players just wanted to play for the Yankees and would take half pay for the privilege.
December 10, 200817 yr Say what you want about playing close to home and getting to bat...when someone offers you $30-40 million more guaranteed than any other team, you just cant say no. Good for him on getting paid like that and I hope he continues the streak of the Yankees not winning World Series.
December 10, 200817 yr QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 07:59 AM) As long as they dont hit the trifecta like they wanted, and get Burnett and Lowe as well, Im not as worried They just got Lowe.
December 10, 200817 yr In order to get the deal completed, ESPN the Magazine's Buster Olney reports that the Yankees added a seventh year to their original six-year, $140-million offer, bringing the total package to seven years and $160 million -- by far the biggest contract for any pitcher in history.
December 10, 200817 yr Terrible deal. He's not better than Johan and he's absolutely crapped in his pants in the playoffs.
December 10, 200817 yr each day that goes by, that mark buerhle deal looks better and better.....even in a crappy economy...
December 10, 200817 yr He'll be on the White Sox by 2012, after several subpar years and persistent injury issues force his removal from New York. The Yankees will pay half his remaining contract. Edited December 10, 200817 yr by Flash Tizzle
December 10, 200817 yr I think CBS sportsline or ESPN (can't remember which) said it was 7 yrs, $160MM Edited December 10, 200817 yr by heirdog
December 10, 200817 yr Wow....New York had a ton of money to throw around and they landed the big fish.
December 10, 200817 yr QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 08:41 AM) They just got Lowe. LOL, I obviously spoke too soon
December 10, 200817 yr QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:26 AM) No pitcher is worth 7/160. No pitcher is worth the risk of 7/160 IMHO
December 10, 200817 yr QUOTE (Texsox @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:29 AM) No pitcher is worth the risk of 7/160 IMHO That was mostly my point.
December 10, 200817 yr QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 08:10 AM) He'll be on the White Sox by 2012, after several subpar years and persistent injury issues force his removal from New York. The Yankees will pay half his remaining contract. I disagree. I think it's more likely that Philip Hughes is on the White Sox by 2010, looking to re-find the stuff that made him such a highly sought after commodity. Sabathia...the Yankees aren't going to pay him that much to go away (see Pavano, Carl).
December 10, 200817 yr Also worth noting...the Brewers this year turned Matt LaPorta in to: 1. Their first playoff appearance in decades (and a decent amount of fan-based good will/excitement) 2. The 26th pick in the first round next year 3. A Sandwich pick. They also gave up Robert Bryson, Zach Jackson, and a PTBNL I'm not sure about, but the star of the deal was LaPorta, and turning him in to 2 picks in the top 40 of the draft really isn't a bad move.

Eh, LaPorta is going to be a monster... but the playoff appearance alone I am sure was worth it to fans who haven't seen that in a long time. Getting two picks hopefully will get them something comparable to LaPorta.
December 10, 200817 yr Author There are only a handful of teams in MLB who can absorb the financial impact of a long-term deal that goes bad early in the contract. It's not about the actual amount of money, but the years. It really gets old seeing the market automatically narrow like that.
December 10, 200817 yr Absolutely ridiculous contract. No team should have this much power to sign everybody they want. There's no players that the Yankees can't buy. Still…. Screw ‘em, we’ll still beat them.
December 10, 200817 yr this is actually some of the most disappointing news of my day thus far. I was quietly hoping he'd resign with Milwaukee, but that just doesn't look like the case. The rest of free agency can proceed now.
December 10, 200817 yr Are the Yankees really that much richer than everybody else or are they more willing to operate in the red to uphold a winning tradition ? Maybe MLB should increase the luxury tax. It doesn't seem like much of a deterent to overspending.
